Geeks love games. That’s been pretty clear for a long time now. But some games that are of particular interest to geeks, you won’t find on a console or in a shrink-wrapped box at Circuit City. Some of the earliest games, the ones some of us were weaned on, don’t even have graphics. And we like them that way.

When I was a young geek with my very first computer (a Texas Instruments 99/4a — programs on catridges, tape drive, no floppies or hard disks), I discovered and fell in love with Scott Adams Adventures. A collection of 13 text-based adventures, I’d plug in the cartridge and load the data tape and wait.. and wait… and wait for the magic to start. That’s been 20 years or so… but the magic’s still out there. You can download them and play them on a PC, or play them in your (java-enabled) browser.

There are lots of other text-based games, but Scott Adams’ work is some of the best. And since I only get one primary link per post, if anyone’s interested, I’ll look at adding more in later postings.
