Really interesting discussion of tweaking the code in the phpBB bulletin board system to handle massive forums. The primary contributor is the administrator of go-gaia.com, whose forum system boasted (as of 12:30 AM on 31-Mar-04) 5,384 users online (out of 441,818 registered users) and only 47,190,029 posts.

Obviously a situation like this requires some special handling, and he discusses many of the mostly small tweaks he’s made to his phpBB installation, and especially to the SQL code, to make pages load in under a second even with that massive amount of traffic. Even if you don’t run a phpBB and have zero interest in running one, it’s a fascinating insight into how you can manipulate SQL to purr under heavy loads.
