I would think that it wouldn’t be too difficult to customize the Linux kernel for best optimization when it comes to these things. All the services loaded during bootup would not be necessary. However, for a car we are talking almost instant startup, since no one would want to turn on their car and wait for 2 minutes before they can start listening to their music.

Of course just plugging in your iPod would probably be the easiest solution.
