If there was any person working at Sun that was left to respect (ignoring newly added Tim Bray) it was Jonathan Schwarz. Well now Schwarz has decided to call RedHat a fork of Linux and I being to question why he says such a thing. I think its because they are pissed they didn’t jump on the Linux bandwagon 2-3 years ago as they should have and since they have a desktop version now they feel they can talk the talk. Sad.

Linus comes in saves the day with his rationalism:

Sure, RH definitely has their own vendor kernel, but it’s not proprietary, and a number of the top Linux kernel contributors are Red Hat employees…

RedHat has nothing to gain from making a proprietary system and the GPL prevents that type of nonsense anyways. If they continue to fine tune the kernel to their liking why should there be any problems as long as the source is posted (which it is)?

We believe that SPARC/Solaris will continue to play a strong role in larger scale SMP environments. [Hewlett-Packard Co.] suggests that Linux is the future [by retiring HP-UX]. HP had ceded their software business to Red Hat. That’s not a mistake we’ll make. Red Hat is focused on open source; we’re focused on open standards

HP didn’t post the $750 million loss last quarter.
