This is a problem that I have always wondered if it is even possible to offer a solution. Research firms (usually sponsored by Microsoft) love to put out numbers for the percentage of people running a given desktop operating system. The majority of the people who use Linux do not buy it over the counter, but download it for free. Some people download multiple distributions and try them all out before landing on one, but how do we count those. Do we even bother?

I am no marketer so the numbers game doesn’t really bother me. You don’t need to see them to know that Linux is making a dent all over the place and that its marketshare will continue to grow be it a little bit at a time.
