A question that I have asked myself numerous times everytime I see an article on WiFi. Even after McDonald’s announced they were offering WiFi, the question still remained of why would anyone want to pay for WiFi access besides the hardcore geek? WiFi access is no longer a luxury, but what many people are beginning to expect in hotels and coffee shops.
As JC demonstrated in his Apartment Complex — Unwired article is that setting up wireless access is not that hard or even that expensive. It should be used to draw people in, but not expected to make a profit off of it.
In Tampa if there is a Barnes & Noble, there is a Borders. Now if one of them offered free WiFi access I really do think that would be the trump card to steal business away from the other. Same with coffee shops and Starbucks. Reminds me of the time when I was 14 and I had to pay for ice at a McDonalds in London.
