The oh so fabulous Lea writes: If you like anime–good anime, that is–you would have heard of the phenomenal Cowboy Bebop series that sets wayward bounty hunters in space.
Shinichiro Watanabe, the brainchild of the series, comes up with a worthy successor in Samurai Champloo. Watanabe can be considered the Quentin Tarantino of anime, as he has successfully merged different cultral references–pop and historical–into one cliched storyline using fresh musical juxtapositions that makes for a very entertaining and surprisingly original watch.
Hip hop and samurais–what more can you want?
Trailer for the series is on the site. It’s in Japanese, unfortunately, but the rabid fan boys and girls will be quick to make English equivalent sites.

I only have Fuji TV on fridays. I watch that one Sakura girl and that cooking show before it. Still it’s pretty amusing… I’ve only seen one other black person on japanese tv… and that was in tha Hideyoshi docu-drama when they showed 10 seconds of Yasuke playing a damned flute.
But yeah… This looks pretty nice. I’m going to check it out.
Then again, I hope it’s not blaxploitation-esque… like the Mushroom Samba episode of Bebop.

Getting now to enjoy this goodness that I have been reading about.
Alright, just got done watching the first episode and hot damn if that wasn’t some good stuff. It definitely had the Cowboy Bebop feel with the action and music so perfectly intertwined. I could do without the idiot girl though, but it seems she is necessity for the comic relief.
Ah, but without the idiot girl, there wouldn’t be the serious storyline that will probably carry through to the very end of the series (like Cowboy Bebop). Oooh, the mysterious sunflower man we have yet to meet, and what of her missing family…?
I find it interesting how the anime community is responding to this series. It’s being fan-subbed as fast as it is being pumped out in Japan–usually with an incredible 3-day turn around (though you usually have to wait one week to get the better quality stuff).
I absolutely hate the opening rap song, though. Ugh. Hopefully, the music improves. Again, I’m used to North American hip hop, and not J-Rap, so who knows.
Very true, I know the idiot girl has a purpose, but I hope over time she does not become so annoying that it hurts the series.
I think it is being quickly fansubbed because it’s getting a hell of a lot easier to do so and its something a little different.
I tend to ignore most of the music and watch the fighting. Of course with fansubs I have the option of fast forwarding.

I didn’t like the J Rap at first… But being something of a rapper myself (even though I hate the title of rapper)… I see the intent and the effect. It’d have been better if just the chorus was in english (a la the Naruto theme) but hey… I’ve been getting into J Pop lately.
The “idiot girl”… I like. She’s somewhere between Ed and Faye. Ir maybe… Ed at Faye’s age… I’m drunk. It’s a great series thusfar, waiting to see more character development. Especially the assassin… he intrigues me.
The assassin will surely meet his end in the last episode. The idiot girl has the idiocy of Ed (even though Ed is a computer genius so let’s call it naivete) and the brattiness of Faye.
Have you watched Ep.3 and 4 yet, the two-parter?
Seems that our “idiot girl” has more up her sleeve (heh, if you see Ep. 4, that can be considered a weak pun) than you think. Very Faye-esque. Ahem. :-)
Also, as the two-parter shows much more development in the storyline and in the characters. If this follows the “Cowboy Bebop” formula, anything that is a two-part episode plays heavily on the “main” storyline.
And apparently, yakuza bosses are African-American. Or look like it, anyway. LOL. Hilarious.
Ah, I don’t get that channel remember? And I can’t find the torrents for it. Dammit, I know this thing won’t make stateside DVD till next year. Errrr….

I saw that thing with the Yakuza boss being black… but then again, I’ve read some places (and even W.E.B. DuBois touches on it a bit) that the one first shogun of japan was of african descent, by the name of Sakanouye No Tamuramaro…
Not to mention that one of Nobunaga’s retainers, Yasuke was black as well.

Mmmm… I’ve watched the first 7 episodes of this anime yet, it’s really good and entertaining already. The hip hop style seems to melt in with the Japanese style culture. I’m not a kinda rap kinda person but I like the opening, Battlecry already!!!
Very good series so far… I like how it takes an intelligent take on a cliche story. Plus each episoide is good on its own. Unlike Naruto or some other un-mentionable anime where you have two watch 8 eps just to get 30 min of story… If it realses in the US I’ll consider buying it.. I saw that someone had the lisciensing

Samuarai Champloo… i saw the first episode before i came to this site and thought to my self… WOW this is now my new cowboy bebop. I hadnt even realized that the creators are one and the same. The animation style, the cool effects (ie The rewind effect)the rad mixing and scratching all set this up to be an amzing new anime.
I only have one problem i have came late to the scene and i cant fina a working bt dload for episode 2,3,4,5 could some one tell me were to find them

So I watched episode 17 yesterday. I’m convinced this is going to be as good as, if not better than cowboy beebop. I know some people have complained that this series’ plot isnt developing as quickly as cowboy’s did – but really if you remember, cowboy’s took quite a while to develop as well – merely snippits of ‘the plot’ intersperced throughout episodes.
Anyway, I am getting my eps from Anime Forever
I noticed that this series has been licensed, and while there is some debate on wether or not downloading licensed anime is ethical or not (I am not trying to start that debate up again), animeforever has continued to sub this series. They also make mention about how the people who have licensed havent put up any fuss about them continuing to sub, so I guess we’re OK for the time being.
This series is ‘stalled’ for the next few months – but should restart soon.

It’s funny how you can tell the greatness of an anime right off the bat. Thirty seconds into the theme song I knew this would be one of my all-time favorites(just like i knew with Yu yu hakusho{the jap version/not that toonami crap}, Bebop, Scryed, Hellsing, there’s more obviously). If you don’t like the theme, hip-hop’s definetly not for you. I’ve only watched the first 8 eps and I’m salivating for more.
Mugen, who’s probably bebop Spike’s ancestor is such a raw, unattached character. While Jin is as mysterious and aloof as he is skillful with a sword. Each character is the polar opposite of the other with the cute, yet gullible Fuu being the medium for their quest.
Bsx media has the entire first season on direct download, the only thing that sucks is that all the eps are in real media format (And i hate real cause they don’t let you change the color/brightness, so im trying to get it on limewire so i can see it on Divx). Please if someone knows where i can get this on direct download in avi or divx please list the site.

SAKANOUYE NO TAMURAMARO: SEI-I TAI-SHOGUN OF EARLY JAPAN
Of the Black people of early Japan, the most picturesque single figure was Sakanouye no Tamuramaro, a warrior symbolized in Japanese history as a “paragon of military virtues,” and a man who has captured the attention of some of the most distinguished scholars of twentieth century America. Perhaps the first such scholar to make note of Tamuramaro was Alexander Francis Chamberlain (1865-1914). An anthropologist, Chamberlain was born in Kenninghall, Norfolk, England, and was brought to America as a child. In April 1911 the Journal of Race Development published an essay by Chamberlain entitled “The Contribution of the Negro to Human Civilization.” While discussing the African presence in early Asia, Chamberlain stated in an exceptionally frank and matter of fact manner:
“And we can cross the whole of Asia and find the Negro again, for when, in far-off Japan, the ancestors of the modern Japanese were making their way northward against the Ainu, the aborigines of that country, the leader of their armies was Sakanouye Tamuramaro, a famous general and a Negro.”
Dr. W.E.B. DuBois (1868-1963), perhaps the greatest scholar in American history, in his book, The Negro (first published in 1915), placed Sakanouye Tamuramaro within a list of some of the most distinguished Black rulers and warriors in antiquity. In 1922, Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) and Charles Harris Wesley (1891-?) in a chapter called “Africans in History with Others,” in their book The Negro in Our History, quoted Chamberlain on Tamuramaro verbatim. In the November 1940 issue of the Negro History Bulletin (founded by Dr. Woodson), artist and illustrator Lois Maillou Jones (1905-1998) contributed a brief article entitled “Sakanouye Tamura Maro.” In the article Jones pointed out that:
“The probable number of Negroes who reached the shores of Asia my be estimated somewhat by the wide area over which they were found on that continent. Historians tell us that at one time Negroes were found in all of the countries of southern Asia bordering the Indian Ocean and along the east coast as far as Japan. There are many interesting stories told by those who reached that distant land which at that time they called `Cipango.’
One of the most prominent characters in Japanese history was a Negro warrior called Sakanouye Tamura Maro.”
Very similar themes were expressed in 1946 “In the Orient,” the first section in Distinguished Negroes Abroad, a book by Beatrice J. Fleming and Marion J. Pryde in which was contained a small chapter dedicated to “The Negro General of Japan–Sakanouye Tamurarmaro.”
In 1940 the great Joel Augustus Rogers (1883-1966), who probably did more to popularize African history than any scholar of the twentieth century, devoted several pages of the first volume of his Sex and Race to the Black presence in early Japan. He cites the studies of a number of accomplished scholars and anthropologists, and even goes as far as to raise the question of “were the first Japanese Negroes?” In the words of Rogers:
“There is a very evident Negro strain in a certain element of the Japanese population, particularly those in the south. Imbert says, “The Negro element in Japan is recognizable by the Negroid aspect of certain inhabitants with dark and often blackish skin, frizzly or curly hair….The Negritos are the oldest race of the Far East. It has been proved that they once lived in Eastern and Southern China as well as in Japan where the Negrito element is recognizable still in the population.”
Rogers mentioned Tamuramaro briefly in the first volume of World’s Great Men of Color, also published in 1946. Regrettably, Rogers was forced to confess that “I have come across certain names in China and Japan such as Sakonouye Tamuramaro, the first shogun of Japan but I did not follow them up.”
Sakanouye Tamuramaro was a warrior symbolized in early Japanese history as a “paragon of military virtues.” Could it be that this was what Dr. Diop was alluding to in his first major book, Nations negres et culture, when he directed our attention to the tantalizing and yet profound Japanese proverb: “For a Samurai to be brave he must have a bit of Black blood.”
Adwoa Asantewaa B. Munroe referenced Tamuramaro in the 1981 publication What We Should Know About African Religion, History and Culture, and wrote that “He was an African warrior. He was prominent during the rule of the Japanese Emperor Kwammu, who reigned from 782- 806 A.D.” In 1989 Dr. Mark Hyman authored a booklet entitled Black Shogun of Japan in which he stated that “The fact remains that Sakanouye Tamuramaro was an African. He was Japanese. He was a great fighting general. He was a Japanese Shogun.”
However the most comprehensive assessment to date of the Black presence in early Japan and the life of Sakanouye no Tamuramaro is the work of art historian and long-time friend and colleague Dr. James E. Brunson. Brunson is the author of Black Jade: The African Presence in the Ancient East and several other important texts. In a 1991 publication entitled The World of Sakanouye No Tamuramaro Brunson accurately noted that “In order to fully understand the world of Sakanouye Tamuramaro we must focus on all aspects of the African presence in the Far East.”
Sakanouye no Tamuramaro is regarded as an outstanding military commander of the early Heian royal court. The Heian Period (794-1185 C.E.) derives its name from Heian-Kyo, which means “the Capital of Peace and Tranquility,” and was the original name for Japan’s early capital city–Kyoto. It was during the Heian Period that the term Samurai was first used. According to Papinot, the “word comes from the very word samuaru, or better saburau, which signifies: to be on one’s guard, to guard; it applied especially to the soldiers who were on guard at the Imperial palace.”
The samurai have been called the knights or warrior class of Medieval Japan and the history of the samurai is very much the history of Japan itself. For hundreds of years, to the restoration of the Meiji emperor in 1868, the samurai were the flower of Japan and are still idolized by many Japanese. The samurai received a pension from their feudal lord, and had the privilege of wearing two swords. They intermarried in their own caste and the privilege of samurai was transmitted to all the children, although the heir alone received a pension.
The “paragon of military virtues,” Sakanouye no Tamuramaro (758-811) was, in the words of James Murdoch:
“In as sense the originator of what was subsequently to develop into the renowned samurai class, he provided in his own person a worthy model for the professional warrior on which to fashion himself and his character. In battle, a veritable war-god; in peace the gentlest of manly gentlemen, and the simplest and unassuming of men.”
Throughout his career, Tamuramaro was rewarded for his services with high civil as well as military positions. In 797 he was named “barbarian-subduing generalissimo” (Sei-i Tai-Shogun), and in 801-802 he again campaigned in northern Japan, establishing fortresses at Izawa and Shiwa and effectively subjugating the Ainu.
In 810 he helped to suppress an attempt to restore the retired emperor Heizei to the throne. In 811, the year of his death, he was appointed great counselor (dainagon) and minister of war (hyobukyo).
Sakanouye no Tamuramaro “was buried in the village of Kurisu, near Kyoto and it is believed that it is his tomb which is known under the name of Shogun-zuka. Tamuramaro is the founder of the famous temple Kiyomizu-dera. He is the ancestor of the Tamura daimyo of Mutsu.” Tamuramaro “was not only the first to bear the title of Sei-i-tai-Shogun, but he was also the first of the warrior statesmen of Japan.”
In later ages he was revered by military men as a model commander and as the first recipient of the title shogun–the highest rank to which a warrior could aspire.”

Anyone else go bug-eyed when Fuu was running with those fireworks in her shirt? o.0 I nearly sprayed Doctor Pepper on my TV. I’ve only seen the first episode on Adult Swim, but I knew it would be awesome by the opening theme alone… Interestingly enough, Mugen’s voice is played by the same guy that played Spike’s (in CB)… and the voice of that fugly coward mafia-boss-type-dude with the blonde son? T’was Jet. Wonder if we’ll be hearing him cameo again later…? And is it me, or does Fuu sound like a (slightly) more reserved version of Ed? Hrm…

I had my reservations at first about the show… At first I thought I’d screwed up and caught it in the middle of the series (since they started with the execution scene) and the rap-scratchings made me at first think it had been horribly bastardized (as they had done with the CCS series, which in its’ originality is quite kick*rip* in its’ own overly cuteness) but it all kinda fell together by the first commercial (at least, for me it did… demnable AS for their commercials!) Oddly enough, the series trio (Mugen, Fuu, Jin) kinda all seem to be like me in different moods… Mugen is my general ‘I don’t give a sh*rip*’ attitude, Fuu is my ‘SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU~GaR!’ mood (usually after too much soda– the state I was in when I saw the ep) and Jin is my ‘I’m busy right now, touch me and I’ll shove this pencil in your eye’ mood. >>; Then again, I also connected well with the CB crew… maybe I need to get outside more… yeah… I’m gonna go stare at that pretty orange thingy in the sky now…
On a sidenote… damn, I want Mugen’s sword.

First off, African influence in asia? I don’t think so, well actually I know so. Where is the evidence to back this up? So what if some nut wrote it in a book back in the 1800′s there is nothing and I mean “nothing” to back it up, no evidence of any kind. The Japanese have always remained isolated, except for the times they have invaded Korea during fuedal japan. The Chinese also remained isolated as well, and how come there is no ancient chinese painting’s of african’s? I guess the dude who wrote all that stuppidity thought African’s built the great wall of China too. The only African’s to travel to other continents were the Arab peoples along the North of Africa, and they didn’t go to Asia they went north to Europe. The only black african’s to ever have influence during the classical age were the Nubians and they had minor influence because of the Egyptians who were Arab. Yes that’s wright Arabs, they are the one’s who built the pyramids. Looks like some people need to go to a University and take a History class. Oh yeah and about Samurai Champloo, you can see it on Cartoon Network’s “AdultSwim” every saturday.

I don’t know much about Tamuramaro (sp?) but it appears that most of the article is referring to Negritos. Negritos are not a group of displaced Africans but indigenous people living in Southeast Asia, mainly in the Philippines and Indonesia. Anthropologists are not quite sure of their origins, but they seem to share many physical characteristics with Black Africans (skin tone, hair).
Proof? Well, I am just speaking off the top of my head from what I’ve read about, but just search “Negritos” (or “Aeta” as they prefer) and you should find tons of articles on them.

I’m new to the site but I love the show. I love Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo,and I think that Mugen represents the young Myomoto Musashi. This is primarily because when was young,Musashi trained himself and was just as careless about killing as Mugen.Secondly ,I think Jin is the older more traditonal side of Musashi.I tell you this as being representative ,not actual since Musashi is dead at the time. Holla back sons of the Battle cry!
well i have watched 19 epis so far i have only a few more to watch and i think the anime is really cool uh my fav epis would have to b the one with when mugen fought that guy that mugen fought that used the tai chi style lol cant remeber what epi it was ill have to go check nehow its a cool anime and yes FUU is very annoying. lolz
uh the guy that smells like a sunflower is her dad she said that in the christian episode, with that guy who pretended to Francisco Xavier grandson lol and he was japanese that episode was stupid annoying but anyhow Fuu told Mugen and Jin who the sunflower guy is. THAT EPI IS CALLED UNHOLY SCRIPT.

i love everything about samurai champloo… from the music down to mugens breakdancing fighting style. this anime is way tooooo cool… but i heard that it didnt work that good in japan, that is the reason why they only made 26 episodes.. i wouldve have liked to see love in this serie.. but oh well.. i hope they make more than the 26 episodes…. :D I would cry for happiness.. ubut for now… iÂŽll read fanfics from S.C.
*sigh* I’ll admit it. You can just call me a supernerd. I literally wait all week for this show and I watch it both times it appears. I memorized the words and some of the moves mugen does. I am so lame that I sometimes randomly start laughing out of nowhere because I was thinking of something that was from the show. I am so pathetic I started to cry when I found otu there would only be 26 eppys. *sigh* I’m hooked and can’t get enough of it. As soon as I get the money I shall be purchasing more SC merchandise.
I bought every volume and have loved something on everyone one of them. I read some comments about the hip hop song at the beginning and I think it is one of the best parts of the episodes. No its not your everyday stupid American b*tchs and money bs that is played on the radio but it sounds like true underground hip hop with a message and fat beat.
I like the symbolism they use with Mugen and Jin. Mugen raw, red, untamed with an impetus nature like fire. Jin fluid, blue, calculating and precise, like water. They even depict the difference between them with the animals rooster and fish. I admit not every episode can be the best but I say this it the best put together series I have ever seen.
Shinichiro Watanabe is not one to continue a series into many episodes. It was the same with Bebop. 26 is the last episode, maybe an epiloge could be done but nothing more. People would eventually get bored. Some plot holes are never filled for a reason, keep us guessing of course. You know an anime is great, when you are finished, you are still thinking as well as talking about it.
This series was closed brilliantly, I think, and if any more episodes were to be made, it would probably throw it off balance…although, I gotta admit, it would be so cool to see these three on more adventures and to see more awesome fight scenes.
I love the symbolism, too. Hehe…It’s quite funny how Jin represents a fish, yet he can’t even catch one. ^_^

Niiiccee… I love the show. I’ve been whatching it. A few bad times (disgudting times) but most of the time it’s just kicking butt.
on a sidenote… where did mugen get his technique? It’s resemblence to breakdancuing is scary.

I think I saw the last episode, but i’m not sure. It was on Adult Swim last week. They just went there seprate ways, was that it? If it is that sucks! I want more closure than that, I expected it to be more like the Samurai x ending, sad but 100% closure, all questions answered.

I found the last song by searching on limeire.
Most of the sites that you will find for the entire Samurai Champloo OST have the albums, but do not include the last song that is played at the end of the last episode. I have no idea why that is…
I was shivering when 26 ended, that show is so great. I listened to an interview with the creator that was taken in May this year and he said he would consider making more if he got good feedback (from famous people I’m guessing).
Somehow I’m thinking he doesn’t like making more or something, Samurai Champloo is amazing!
