best way to keep your computer in good shape and never get a virus, clean istall of any windows, except windows 7.set up with microsoft office, adobe reader, img burn, then install windows steady state, save, then when ever you restart or shutdown your computer it will go back to the state it was when you installed windows steadystate.dont install any virus protection or service packs as this slows down your pc and takes up lots of space on your hardrive, and if you have downloaded something dodgy you wont know about it,because when your start up next time ittts ggggggggggoooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeee………….

yeah, and it doesn't affect my BeOS box, either, Ben. Or my TI 99/4a. Just the windows machines most people think of when you say "PC" rather than "Mac."

No offense, it just baffles me why linux people have to keep harping on it. We know. It's been said. Repeatedly. All over the place.

This article is, I'd think, more intended for the convenience of the technical folks who read this site than their enlightenment in basic Windows maintenance. It's something I can email to the next person who asks me why their computer is slow rather than killing an hour explaining it to them in my own words.

Another thing that will help is if you setup a static sized page file, rather then the default dynamic page file size. You can google this for more information.

Also under optimizing your system, windows 2000, and XP have a ton of default services running that are not needed. Index service, UPNP service, etc. The less programs running the better.

Note this is coming from a unix admin that "deals" with windows at times and this is what I have found useful.
