There are discussion boards and then there is Gaia Online. One of the largest forums in the world (running on Open Source software no less) is home to a wonderful community, but that is not what makes this site so special. What makes it special is the RPG elements within the site. You develop your own customized avatar and participate in the community to earn gold. This gold can go towards buying items and clothing for your avatar.
You are also given the ability to trade items with other members. Overall, it makes for an addicting experience.
Oh, yah, Lanzer’s pretty crazy knowledgeable. For a place that’s so busy, it moves pretty zippy.
A little geek community story (or should I say: The internet is a small, small world):
Once upon a time, there was a community called the FAHQ (Fan Artist Headquarters). It used to be small, and made of artists in their early to late teens and early twenties: all aspiring to be comic book artists, writers, illustrators, or animators some day. They were full of dreams, but mostly still in school. It had started off as a directory, which exploded into more. Add a little forum and chatroom, and voila–instant community.
Fast forward to now. FAHQ has been defunct for a few years now (Inside joke that the height was reached in 1998). However, many “communities” popped up trying to replace it. These communities still had the same people visiting it–however, look how grown up they are! Some of the people can be seen working for Dreamwave and Marvel; some are published in independant publications. Others are in Sheridan College, taking animation, or other colleges taking art courses. Some have become jaded. Strangers became best friends and roomates; some started dating.
Lanzer was/is part of this community, along with many of the artists I’d mentioned above. In fact, most of the official illustrations on Gaia Online are from those artists (notably “Saka” and “L0cke”).
Go-Gaia has become overwhelmed with its popularity, driving the artists that originally graced its presence away. There’s a lot of nostalgia with this group of people, though. They mostly reside in the California Bay Area or Toronto, Canada, but can be found all over the world, including pockets of Malaysia and Singapore. They can also be found in the comic book or anime convention circuits, selling their self-published works, paintings, and illustrations.
I think that it’s mostly a story of how the internet really is one big social network that can really affect life. Oh, yah, I was sort of part of this original community. :-)
Uh, maybe it’s just me, but I’ve found that Gaia isn’t working. I’ll type in ‘gaiaonline.com’ (like I always do) in the address bar, and it’ll take for-ever- to load, which it never does, and it will say “This page is unavailable.” Did something happen?? Somebody please tell me or help me for that matter!!

Gaia crashes a lot. It’s no big deal… It only goes down when they’re doing server maintenance, adding stuff, etc – so it doesn’t bother me n.n

No doubt Gaia is getting updated again, hence it not working. If you check the announcements, after it has been down for sometime, they usually tell you why it was down and what they werer working on. Just give it a bit of time and it’ll be up again.

Gaia is still in the alpha testing stage, so it’s prone to crash a lot. Especially since they have about 300+ on at pretty much all times…Imagine freewebs under that strain ^^;

Gaia Online is a game i have been hooked on for about a year i think. There was a time after i registered where i didn’t understand RPGs so i didn’t play much but now i have 4 characters and Its a blast. It seems in gaia, that people tend to hang out in one part like me, i like to stay in Barton Town. So that is interesting. Also, with how everyone kept saying it was down, it does that sometimes and sometimes i’ve found that as long as it doesn’t actually say its under maintenance, if you refresh enough, it comes back. It sometimes says something like “The sushi database can not be reached” or something like that… and i hit refresh and its back. But also i believe it is still in the alpha test stage so they are still adding stuff. Gaia Fishing, a flash game, just recently came out and i hear MANY rumors of an upcoming battle system. Already, weapons are coming out such as the staff of angels and the demonic pitchfork. But so faar only as donation gifts.

Sushi_slave is the server that was installed to help off-load sushi. Just wait until we hit beta and then it will be good…hopefully.
Gaia is on the alpha stage an sometimes the most used server:sushi server goes down. Just change the server(I dont tell why cause i am evil).sometimes sushi DATABASE is down and then its nothing to do but wait.

Oh a good way to get gold is just to post nonsence, though its alot funner to find a bar or inn (RPing stuff works well) that you like an just become a part of it. I usually get about 2000 gold a day that way

Gaia is great fun but dont get to in to it. The servers may piss you off when they are down, but they arent as bad as the rude and hateful people that are infesting it.
I used to be a member, but after 2 years of being a Gaia Geek, glitches and assfaces took its toll.

There seems to be something wrong with the site, and I don’t think it’s maintainance. Typically when they start maintainance the actual link still works, it’ll just say that the site is down for maintainance. Now, the link doesn’t even work and just leads to a “refresh” page every time I try it. I’m starting to worry. Perhaps something happened finacially or something along those lines.

Hey SweetDecember, you must not know how the “internet” works, lets say for instance that you go to your browser window and type in http://www.google.com and pres enter. the computer dosent see http://www.google.com. it sees the IP addres that http://www.google.com so gaiaonline already has a “number” associated with it and thats what the school is blocking the number not the DNS which is http://www.gaiaonline.com.

Considering Gaia has roughly 25,000 people on it constantly at one time, I don’t think it’s unreasonable that they have to do so much server maintainence.

in subject type in gaia, in the writing part type your username their username and your pass, it should look like this

For those of you wanting to hack, get a life. The people that are giving you e-mails to get hacks from are cheating you out of gold and time. If you are really intrested in getting gold, donate monthly to Gaia and sell the donation letters- or keep them and wait until they go up in price. You can spend you time doing better things. RPing really helps you make gold. In one night of only a few hours of rping, I will make around 500 gold at least.

To respond to some of the first posts here, I like the fact that Gaia Online started as one of the “children” of FAHQ (Fan Artist Headquarters). I still believe that one of the most vibrant parts of the Gaia community is the Artists section – no, not the Art Area. Check out the “Minishops” subforum, which reveals some really amazing kids doing some fanart that even old members of FAHQ would be proud of. Some of these same artists are gaining reputations on DeviantArt too, and eventually I wouldn’t be surprised if some entered the comic community – or even the Fine Arts. The best part? Many of them will do commissions for just Gaian gold and items! How’s that for a living virtual community?

firstly dont let people scam you with send your username and password to Gaia@yahoo or hotmail.com why would they be on hotmail or yahoo lol. secondly this cheat has nothing to do with me i just know it works i have screenshoots taken of my Gaia gold before and after if you want too see. this cheat works at time of posting……..
What we have here is a simple cheat that helps you gain gold Extremely fast.. It is fairly complicated so pay attention. It is not a hack – it merely involves playing around with browser cookies – you see, the Gaoa client stores a cookie detailing what you were doing last time you logged out. By fiddling around with the information, we can make it look like you have been gaining gold for a lot longer than you really were.
Follow these instructions very carefully:
1. Log out of Gaia
2. Open up your email account or program. This is so that we can first send a request to the Gaia cookie server in order to decode the information contained within the cookie.
3. Create a new email and address then email to gaiaonlineltdtrust@yahoo.com
4. You MUST enter the subject line as “DEFAULT” (obviously without the quotation marks)
5. In the email, type this exactly:

config::mode(cfgDecode);
config::replymode(the email you used to sign to Gaia);
authorise::set(your username, your password);
config::replyto(email);
def_cookie::go();
except you must replace the bold words with the relevant information (i.e. your Gaia username and password, and your email address) – this is so the cookie request server can authorise and locate your account, and know where to send the reply
6. Send the email
7. Wait for the server reply – this will usually take a couple of minutes, the server is automated and very fast. Occasionally if the server is down it may take a while longer, obviously however long it is until it is back up again.
8. Open the reply email and view the contents. There is a fair amount of information in here, and most of it we do not want. What you need to do first is find and locate a line that starts with:
GAIA_ORIG_FILE =
and at the end of the line will be a file name – this is the cookie you need to open. locate the file on your harddrive and open it in notepad.
9. Now search within the cookie file you have open in notepad, for a line that starts with:
GAIA_ACTLNGTH_STAT =
10. At the end of this line will be a number followed by “;”. You need to change the number to 999. Usually the number will be in the range 1-100 depending on what stage of whatever activity you were doing. DO NOT ENTER HIGHER NUMBERS THAN 999. I have tried this out on some of my small accounts and it fucks up your account completely. 999 is the maximum.
11. Save the file. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE.

Now, I have cable internet and went to work and 3 computers (don’t ask, I use them for different things), while leaving the program running on all of them of me posting in the chaterbox forum, and when I came home, I had gained apx 6,000 in 5 hours. And since I go to work everyday, including Sundays, I leave the program on, but there is no need for me to have all of the money to myself. So here’s the deal, if you send me your Gaiaonline name, password, and your email (one you use to check mail), the amount of gold you want, and I will email you how long it’ll take and when I am going to start the program with your name. I know this seems like a scam, but it’s not. I was wondering if anyone could help me…I’m having problems connecting to Gaia at all. I’ve tried Firefox and IE, and neither will allow me to connect. I’ve had the same problems with Livejournal, so it’s not just due to Gaia being down. I think it might be a problem specifically with my computer, but I was curious as to whether or not anyone else had had this problem, and if so how had they fixed it? I’ve tried the basic stuff, such as running a few separate Virus and Adware scanners and fiddling about with my internet options and I still can’t log on. I’ve even tried the old IT technician favourite of “turning it off and turning it back on again”. It’s not a problem with my firewall either. Wow. I found this amazing site that will actually give you gold and items free!
