Off grid means that we are not connected to the electrical grid, water, sewer or gas mains.
Along with that it’s a hourse made out of straw. Looks modern. And was developed by a web designer. Runs its own electricity through solar panels, a wind generator and passive solar heating. Wow.
Thanks to Mark for the link.

That’s not particularly spectacular I know, because I live in a “disconnected” house. ;-) We create our own electricity, almost exclusively through solar arrays (living in southern California makes that possible), with a generator as backup. Gas is delivered here about once a month, and we have our own well for water (which is never short we take long showers, water the lawn several times a day, wash clothes and dishes, etc.). And we have a leech field for all waste. And the best part? No utility bills, aside from gas. :-)
Granted, our home isn’t anywhere near as extravagant as that one, but my dad isn’t exactly made of money. By the way, Edison wanted $100,000 from us to extend its electrical lines an extra mile to reach our (and our neighbors’) house(s), so that’s why we settled for self-sufficiency.
And for pete’s sake, somebody tell Mr. Hyatt to make labels work correctly in Safari! :-)
