The New New Nintendo DS

When Nintendo finally showed the Nintendo DS there were some rave reviews going around detailing how spectacular it was. Then Sony showed its new PSP and made the DS look like a plastic kids toy. In retaliation, Nintendo has redesigned the DS to make it look just a little bit more cooler. Now it looks more like a case for your sunglasses, but it is definitely an upgrade from what they had before.

The DS now sports a thinner, black base and angular platinum flip-top cover, with larger face and shoulder buttons than the E3 unit, some of which have been “reconfigured for optimum use”. The unit also gains a storage slot for the stylus, which was missing from the E3 unit, and we’re told that the speakers now broadcast in stereo, with or without headphones.

I think the DS’ new look is great! I never thought the DS looked bad in the first place, but this is still exciting for me because everywhere I go, those biased Sony fans rave about how “sexy” the PSP is, and then they comment on the DS being “bulky”. Do you know how disgusting it is to say an inanimate object is sexually appealing? Sleek, maybe. But SEXY?! That’s a disturbing way of thinking of it. The DS always looked better than the PSP in my eyes, even with its older design. You have to look beneath the hardware. And no, I don’t mean specs. I mean INNOVATIVENSS. The PSP may have “the specs” but the DS has THE INNOVATIVENSS. Sure, the “touch screen” has been used before, but on a gaming system? No. Off-topic, I know. Either way, the new DS looks great, and I already reserved mine, so I’ll be awaiting its arrival in November.
