As reported last week, IDC claimed that Linux overtook Mac as the No. 2 platform worldwide. This week Wired is running an article that the Mac still holds a significant lead over Linux in the desktop market. Who is to be believed? Does it matter?

Kastner’s 3 percent estimate is backed up by numbers published by Google, which logs the different desktop systems used to access its site. According to Google, Mac users number 3 percent, while Linux weighs in at 1 percent.
