Here’s a great tool for anyone who still needs DOS for something… DosBox — not an emulator, it actually runs a complete dos virtual machine on your system. Bloody fantastic for running old games like Betrayal at Krondor or any of the great Adventure/RPG or Bishoujo games that don’t run well on windows.

Runs nicely on any reasonable PC, though you may have to speed it up from the default for some software, or use frame skipping if your PC is a bit slow. Runs fine for most stuff on my 500MHz G3 iBook, if I turn the sound off (it’s very choppy, otherwise) — can’t handle Krondor, though… that game was kinda stretching the limits of DOS. On my 2.5GHz PC, of course, everything runs perfectly.

Just be sure to read the readme file and maybe print out the keyboard commands BEFORE you click in it, lose control of your mouse and keyboard and have to reboot your computer. :-)
