Battle Royale

You get Battle Royale — a controversial pulp hit that made the book a runaway best-seller in Japan, and spawned not one, but two films, plus a manga series.
Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie offering, Kill Bill, was littered with Battle Royale references–most notably, the casting (Gogo Yubari, played by Chiaki Kuriyama was in Battle Royale I, while Sonny Chiba who played Hattori Hanzo [the name also a reference to Battle Royale] was in Battle Royale II).
In short, the story is about a randomly selected class of Jr. high kids that gets put into a government “Program” where they are taken and put into an isolated island or location and are forced to kill each other, until one survivor is left.
The books, movies, mangas, as well as the translations for all three each have differing viewpoints to every aspect of the Battle Royale storyline.
It’s a sensational and violent story, but one that has deeper emotional and psychological touches. I urge you to check it out!

1This is a good one. I had no idea what Battle Royale was except “it’s freaking awesome” as I was told. I’m not into most japanese films but this movie was awesome. Or rather freaking awesome. I guess it was just entertaining watching kids run around and kill each other. It’s drama and action!

5Ages, yes, but like the movie Hero and Shaolin Soccer, North America isn’t very informed about gems from Asia until a few years have passed and they have heavy Hollywood backup.
Also, the manga releases in English aren’t THAT old (Volume 1 was released August 2003), and neither is the book’s translation (released in March 2003).

8Battle Royale f*****g rocks! I first saw it in my english class a week ago but it was sooo good i had to buy it on DVD and I have watched it about 50 times in one week! I don’t want to see the 2nd film though, it mite ruin the point of the first one for me, but if you guys like than that’s cool.
p.s. anyone in the UK know where I can buy the novel from? Aregatou

10This is a good one right here. I haven’t seen the movie, but I’m currently reading the manga, and it is awesome! I would really like to see the movie, but I don’t think they ever released it where I live, I think it was too controversial. I don’t know about you guys, but I live in America, thats why they haven’t released it. If any of you here live in America, and know how to get it, please tell me!

14My only gripe with Battle Royale is not with the movie itself but with the sentiments of its fans. I can’t take it when fifteen-year-olds comment on how “cool” the film is because of the blood and guts. It is simplistic and should not be viewed with that perspective.
Battle Royale essentially is an excellent portrayal of a dystopic society. A society that is paranoid, hysterical and all too possible with the problems of the modern age. It chastisises a society constructed in a way that almost encourages the alienation of people who are different and the effects of the competitiveness of the school structure and what constitutes success. “I’m going to win and get in to a good college.” There are other ideas explored in this film although there is too much to say and not enough time to say it in.
Please I beg future watchers to understand the concepts the film portrays rather than focus on the violence. The violence is not for entertainment, rather it serves as a tool not to desensitize ourselves from it but as a deterrant.
