I can't take it when fifteen-year-olds comment on how "cool" the film is because of the blood and guts. It is simplistic and should not be viewed with that perspective. Battle Royale essentially is an excellent portrayal of a dystopic society. A society that is paranoid, hysterical and all too possible with the problems of the modern age. It chastisises a society constructed in a way that almost encourages the alienation of people who are different and the effects of the competitiveness of the school structure and what constitutes success. "I'm going to win and get in to a good college." There are other ideas explored in this film although there is too much to say and not enough time to say it in. Please I beg future watchers to understand the concepts the film portrays rather than focus on the violence. The violence is not for entertainment, rather it serves as a tool not to desensitize ourselves from it but as a deterrant. I had no idea what Battle Royale was except "it's freaking awesome" as I was told. I'm not into most japanese films but this movie was awesome. Or rather freaking awesome.
