After a bit of speculation by FG and a lot of other sites, Nintendo has proven us all wrong and released the official release date and price of the Nintendo DS. It will be $149.99 and will be released on November 21st. So we actually get it cheaper and sooner than we thought, hooray! Plus it is going to include the PictoChat application for chatting/drawing with other DS users, and is fully compatible with Gameboy Advance games.
Additional details from PortaGame: The DS will have a 6-10 hour battery life (6 when using the wi-fi feature), and will be bundled with Metroid Prime: Hunters, according to USA Today. This just keeps getting better and better!
Another Update: According to Gizmodo, the Metroid Prime: Hunters game that is bundled with the DS will only be a demo of the first few levels of the game, plus some of the multiplayer portion. It is not the full game. However, PictoChat, the chatting/drawing “game”, is stored in the firmware of the system itself, so it is the fully functional version. More details as they are uncovered…

1Good thing I didn’t get that GameBoy Advance SP after all. Great news!
September 21st, 2004 at 12:21 pm
2The only bad thing about not having an SP is that you can’t play Multiplayer GBA games on the DS. But other than that, yeah it’s awesome. I will have both. :)

September 26th, 2004 at 3:06 pm
6i cant wait for the DS i hope it blows psp out of the water with great launch titles. final at least i can have some ok graphics to look at.
September 28th, 2004 at 11:39 am
7I am considering buying it. My friend is foolish in thinking that it is nothing but a gimmick the plays N64 games. It must really be good
September 28th, 2004 at 11:42 am
8By the way: DOn’t sell your Game Boy Player of GBA just yet, it is only backward compatible with Game Boy Advance games. No GBC or GB games :(
September 28th, 2004 at 11:44 am
9Also, it’s only compatible with single player GBA games.
Which will be too bad, if this is true.
October 1st, 2004 at 5:57 pm
10hmmmm… i was thinking about get on but… then i heard about the song psp which i think is gonna blow aways this Ds thing… think about it a N64 or a ps2… but smaller.. i go with the ps2…
October 2nd, 2004 at 5:31 am
11its known that if ps did not have the chance to rip/clone/crack games it would have not succeded over other consoles.
PSP seem to have hard DRM tech on a proprietary media, so I don’t think it has advantages over others.
October 4th, 2004 at 5:54 pm
12THIS IS THE BEST SYSTEM EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IM GONNA GET IT ON THE 1st DAY!(DUH)
October 4th, 2004 at 10:16 pm
13The Sony PSP is NOT a ps2.. so don’t get your hopes up, dont go by the nice little screenshots they slap on the console. The DS simply does seem amazing in creativity, practicality, and gameplay… online game play, voice recognition, better than n64 graphics, duel processors, stereo sound, touch pad… its a dream come true…
Just a way how over a decade of portable gaming experience pays off.. congrats nintendo, and thank you

14I don’t exaclty think that the DS will be as great as the PSP. But it will be good. I have compared the types of games that the DS adn PSP will have and I have come to the conclusion that I would prefere the PSP because the games are probably harder, the age the sony people are trying to aim for, for PSP is more teenage to adult type of thing. I have so far heared better things from the PSP than the DS, I am hoping to get the opinions on people before buying it, it would be kind of stupid buying it and then finding out it sucks, or buying and have the PSP be better than it, which might be the case
October 5th, 2004 at 1:15 am
15Heh, I’ve seen some peoples saying that they’re thinking about buying it. I actually just preordered mine from EBGames yesterday. :) And, despite the critics here, I think the DS will be a wonderful thing indeed, for every Nintendo system since NES has been.
October 5th, 2004 at 6:11 am
16I love how everyone has solidly formed opinions of which system will be better, which system is being marketed to which demographic, and exactly what kind of games will be made for each system when not a single one of you have even seen or played either system…
“its known that if ps did not have the chance to rip/clone/crack games it would have not succeded over other consoles.”
What? That is complete speculation and just plain wrong and silly… Where do you guys come up with this stuff… Gees…

17let us not forget the virtual boy….. nuff said
October 6th, 2004 at 1:20 pm
18What is that supposed to mean? They have one miserably bad console design so automatically everything else they ever create is destined to be a failure? What about the GameBoy Advance? It was created after the Virtual Boy, but it’s sold millions and millions of systems…
October 8th, 2004 at 8:14 pm
19I better get this baby before it sells out. You should too. I found a site that shows you all of current prices and games for it – NintendoDSStore.com
October 11th, 2004 at 2:35 pm
20I’am going to get the nintendo ds too it’s going to be off the fesizle
October 11th, 2004 at 2:39 pm
21I have some more info it will play need for speed undreground, mario cart, spider man 2, resident evil, and 120 more games. Thats’s why the DS is going to be hot. I’ll tell you guy/gals if I get more info on the ds or if i get info on the psp. I’am out!
October 15th, 2004 at 8:24 pm
22I want the DS but the stylus thing is bothering me. I’m left handed you see. Most developers don’t think about us lefties. I hear some games will use the stylus for aiming like they do in Metroid. This means that they are probally assuming that the player will use his/her right hand for aiming and left hand for moving.
October 16th, 2004 at 7:49 pm
23whst the heck is your peoples problem with the playstation here? All i here is this rip crack clone stuff. well YOUR WRONG the ps2 and the ps came before the nitendo64 the xbox and game cube they have more games and more originals than anybody as for handhelds they will probaly both do good becuase they come out 2 months apart. jeez

24i like to see how many fingers i can get into the center of a donut without breaking it.

25DS is going to be certainly the best system for at least the next 3 years.
I hate Sony for Taking Nintendo’s creation-”The Nintendo Sony Playstation”-and making it their own. They stole Nintendo’s ideas and knowledge of gaming……jerks.
Calm Down….

26I’ll buy it for sure!

27OMG think about it.
The reason why ur getting a portable system is so u can play it anywhere and enjoy playing anywhere. It would be kinda hard to keep a PSP in ur pocket cuz its so big. Whereas the nintendo ds just slips in ur pocket easily.
post a reply
October 26th, 2004 at 4:58 pm
28I don’t think you could call it “easily” unless you are wearing cargo pants. I mean the DS is still kind of big. It’s certainly not GBA SP, that’s for sure. Now that little thing can definitely slip “easily” into just about any pocket.
October 28th, 2004 at 12:52 am
29MMMMMMM DONUTS!
October 28th, 2004 at 3:27 pm
30Hey, all of you complaining about the difference of the performance between psp and ds, think twice! When using processors that generates 3d graphics on such small screens as 3′, you can lower the resolution far more than when you are viewing it on the tv. The psp has a larger screen and more powerful processor, and such it will draw much more battery power. Game designers today are good at using minimum performance to create marvellous results! Just look at what Rare did with the donkey kong series to the snes.
The nintendo ds will ROCK, and psp will remain a bleak imitaion… sorry sony- there can only be one winner!
October 28th, 2004 at 5:57 pm
31Ds or PSP… Ds or PSP… I chose Ds Sony sucks (exept for making tv’s) The ds has everything You need and ive heard that you can make wireless phone calls for free on this thing with certain hook up( only in certain areas) can anyone confirm this?
October 29th, 2004 at 6:12 pm
32sony and microsoft are just so goddamn’ mainstream… gah.. grow up. (had to say it)
i truly do think the psp looks great. but i’m not into the performance thing.. i like the idea of creativity like voice recognition and touchscreens… ds seems like a damn smart construction!
and concerning those who believe that the ds just will become a handheld n64. remember this:
“The only restrictions that games suffers from are the developers. NOT the systems!”
Go Nintendo! lead the way in jungle of gamingexperience!
November 1st, 2004 at 6:43 pm

November 5th, 2004 at 11:57 am
36The DS will be a huge success…..HUGE! It has upstepped psp with a lot of things, more screens(lol), larger library of games (all gba games), touch screen, Wifi ability, and majority of people prefer to get it. Oh and the price…… it’s self explanitory
PS: for all u lefties out there, u can make the abxy buttons act as the d-pad
PSS: There was nothing wrong with the virtual boy! So what if it gave people seisures…………
November 8th, 2004 at 8:30 pm
37PSP has the new Final Fantasy game(Advent Child wichis the continue of FF7) wich I would gladly buy the PSP for just that game. But then I found out about the PSPs 2 hour bettery life and decided I wanted a DS
November 8th, 2004 at 8:36 pm
38Oh yeah and PSP has some good games coing out too like THUG and Need for Speed:Underground. The game list might not be as exstensive as the DS but those are some awesome games.
November 8th, 2004 at 9:52 pm
39im a nintendo and sony fan but i think the DS will be better than the psp.. sorry sony but nintendo has owned the handheld position way too long.. nintendo has a lot more experience and has almost always had succses with handhelds.. dont get me wrong the psp looks good too, ill probably purchase both.. but im guessing the DS will be better
November 8th, 2004 at 9:54 pm
40oh yea one more thing.. i heard the PSP price is gonna be ludacris! not a smart move sony..

WHAT in the HELL are you talking about?! Sony never stole from nintendo! Nintendo is meant and directed towards family games. Sony is about the music, gta, resident evil(which ORIGINALLY came out with it ), and so forth, you queer. As far as the size go, who gives a dam if it can fit in your pocket. Anything that plays 360 degree, color, high tech graphics, online multiplayer, etc. should be fine with anybody else. If not, your own personality is being a whiny, complaining, consumer eatin’, person that is never satisfied! Nobody says you have to take a side with one of the two companies ( unless of course they seriously sold a piece of garbage…literally ) then yeah, go ahead, open your big mouth. Let me tell you something, there is no war here, okay?
As for the positive side goes, I’m getting both the psp AND the ds, because I believe they will both do good, because the are the first handhelds that could handle the power of playing 360 degree high resolution graphics and a little dinky machine, and THAT is what I’ve been waiting for since I was 10, and it’s good enough for me. The time has come…
November 12th, 2004 at 1:50 pm
44Oh yeah, another thing, some of you posters are super freaks. You guys like post your replies as if you were TALKING to the DS. Here’s some news, the DS is not a living creature. It’s not going to talk back, so don’t talk to it.
November 13th, 2004 at 8:45 am
45yeah i’m gonna get it for christmas
The deal keeps getting better and better, altho MP: Hunters will only be demo. Other than that, yeah, there goes my cousin’s 200 bucks :)
November 13th, 2004 at 4:33 pm
46How nice. I am still getting a SP until the Nintendo Gimmick has its price reduced and the Gameboy Advance (bless it!) is truely 6 ft under.
November 13th, 2004 at 7:06 pm
47first of all–kevo i agree with you. ps and ps2 SO did not rip games off but don’t pop your head open complaining about it jeez. also steve have you ever thought how much that would cost? the sp costs 70 BUCKS! you would have to wait forever to get the ds to $80, and by then sony and nintendo would have come out with about 30 more consoles by then.
November 13th, 2004 at 7:08 pm

November 14th, 2004 at 2:55 pm
50nintento ds is going to be so much better than psp becauseit just is …………..screw u sony psp
November 14th, 2004 at 4:48 pm
51i think the DS is going to be great!
it will definately over power the psp with its caperbilities, for 1 i think sony are losing out, they are basically overloading there device with too much features like mp3, camera and dvd. i mean WOW talk about extra exsagurating. it will be a good hardware but nintendo r right, its not a games console.
November 14th, 2004 at 11:41 pm
52i’m getting this for christmas see you all on picto chat and i know pitcho chat is spelled wrong.by the way are they really going to put 2 nintendo ds in some of the boxes and how long if so
November 15th, 2004 at 12:07 pm
53My uncle is a VP agt nintendo so I got a chance to play the DS last night (Nov 14th) Awesome graphics, good control and sound. Ill end up buying both it and PSP for variety of titles. One really cool feature is that it remains in standby always so when someone enters the 30 ft radius+ it will beep telling you that you can challenge them / go multiplayer without knowing the person. This could prove a small problem with airplanes however…because since it cant turn off completely it might be banned from planes…
November 17th, 2004 at 8:22 pm
54for all those who like psp i think you are crazy ds will kill psp
November 18th, 2004 at 2:51 am
55For those Nintendo Fans concerned about the Stylus, I found out that there is a Thumb pad that allows you to use in place of a stylus, so you can just move your thumb.
(Go read the review at ign.com)
I like the PSP graphics and PS1 was my first console so I will probably stick with it. I also got interested in Nintendo GBA, but I was a bit disappointed at not having a backlight, that kinda pointed me away from nintendo.
