So I am at Suncoast Video on Saturday looking for some hot new anime to get my hands on. I go straight to the anime section where there is another guy looking around. But this wasn’t a normal guy, but one of those scary geeks who look like the only time they saw the sun is when they left the hospital just after being born.
When I approached he got this weird look like I was invading his territory. I might have looked like one of the kids who would pick on him in high school. Anyways, I am looking at the dvds starting with the ‘A’s and moving down, which means I am getting closer and closer to him. I stop at ‘M’ and he sits there like he is waiting for me to do something.
Two more kids show up and start to look at the anime. I think they were scoping out a Samurai X boxset and couldn’t decide whether or not to get it. They are talking out loud about the merits of Samurai X when the uber geek tells them how cool the series is. Pretty normal, but this is when it gets weird.
The uber geek starts acting out scenes in the middle of the store! I don’t mean talking about the scenes, I mean actually acting like he has a sword and fighting the enemy. All with slow motion effects and everything. The cool thing was that he was all into it. He was in the zone.
Unfortunately, his portrayal of Samurai X steered me clear of the series and I just played it safe and bought discs 5 & 6 of Initial D.

1Hahaha! Wait until you visit a convention. Strangeness galore! Lots of girls speaking in high pitched voices and pseudo-Japanese, and a lot of guys trying desperately to pick up said girls, who are also desperate. Watching it is like a social experiment gone awry.
But it’s too bad that you passed up a completely good series because you were steering clear of the antics of uberdork. “In the zone” — LOL.
Samurai X is really Rurouni Kenshin–so it may be a good idea to find the ones marked with the original Japanese name. And get the series with the Shishio story arc. The series really begins and ends there.

2Oh I will eventually check it out. Problem is these damn companies are releasing the Anime much faster than the rate I am able to buy them at and I already have a lot of catching up to do.
You on the other hand seem to work at the factories where they produce them and just take them right off the conveyor belt.

3Rurouni Kenshin actually had a run on the Cartoon Network/Channel for awhile. Not sure if it still is on there or not, but a decent series if anything.
For a good anime movie that is a little different, I suggest Tombstones for Fireflies (name varies).

4Grave of the Fireflies is I think the more common name. But yeah. Need to check that one out. I hear it’s emotionally depressing but good.

5Yeah I heard about Grave of the Fireflies last year, but heard it was one of those things you could only watch once in your life since it was so depressing.
