Sun Releases J2SE 1.5/5.0

New features include:

  • New language updates: Metadata, Generics, Enumerated types, Autoboxing of primitive types
  • New JVM Monitoring and Management API
  • Improved out-of-box performance
  • New (but compatible) default Java look and feel.

I don’t use Java so I don’t really have much else to say about this announcement. Ho-hum. Just Open Source the damn thing.

I do get a little annoyed with people assuming that opensourcing something in some way makes it better. Java has succeeded because it’s development has been sheparded by Sun, IBM, BEA etc., no inn spite of it.

I forgot to add my *snicker* to the entry there Sam. I just said it because I also find it funny how everyone assumes Open Sourcing everything will instantly make it better. I also just meant to imply that if they did Open Source it then that would be more interesting to me than releasing a new version.

    Sorry for the confusion.

It’s OK – commenting late at night always seems to bypass by normally more thorough sarcasm scan :-)
