Reggie Fils-Aime, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Nintendo America, confirmed that Nintendo’s next generation console codenamed “Revolution” will follow the Sony’s timetable for PS3 (which is expected to hit stores in Q2 2006). Reggie also attacked Microsoft’s rush on releasing the Xbox 2.
Not that I want to ignore the Xbox, but certainly we believe that a rush to a new system is a mistake.
It’s the second time this year that a high executive from Nintendo attacked Microsoft’s new generation console. Former Nintendo Europe boss, David Gosen, said last June at the ELSPA Game Summit in London that in every cycle some manufacturer not profiting from the current cycle is eager to kick-start the next one.
Xbox 2 is probably a big mistake for Microsoft, specially because it is almost impossible for it to be backward compatible with the current Xbox version, but that doesn’t take away the charm of its hardware: multi-processor and ATI’s next generation graphic chip (codenamed R500). And I’m still stuck on an 800MHz CPU and a GeForce 4 MX. How sad…

1I can see why MS is planning on releasing the XBox2 early on; it worked for Sony with the PS2 in terms of snapping up market share. I’m going to wait until all three are released (or at least until screenshots and game lists are shown) before making my decision anyway, as I’m sure most people will.

2Yeah, it worked for Sony with the PS2 but humorously enough, it failed for Sega twice. It all depends on if they can generate enough interest and hype.

3Too bad the Dreamcast was the greatest console ever made. Sony won out because it got the better games over N64 and it was easier to pirate CDs than cartridges.

4Like Netaku said, it all depends on how you generate interest and hype. Honestly, I think Microsoft can make people wanna die to have a Xbox2 and I’m starting to think that Nintendo and Sony will lose a considerable market share in the next generation consoles.

5They key is still the games, and MS is going to have to do a much better job with the Xbox 2 than the did with the first one. For like 2 years the only decent game on the Xbox was Halo. Up until the last few months if you asked any Xbox freak why you should buy an Xbox, their first and sometimes only reason is because you can play Halo. Finally after several years they are starting to get other good games like Burnout 3, that star wars game, Fable, etc.
I’ve always had absolutely no interest in the Xbox, but with a few of the new games coming out, I’m interested enough to go buy one in the next few weeks.
But the real reason I’m buying it is so I can put in a mod-chip and use it as a media server. My DVD players got fried in a storm, so I’ve been having to watch movies on my computer for a year or so. It will be nice to watch them on a real TV again.

6Why don’t Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony just make three systems that have games that work on either system? that way their is no controversy over the games that come out
