10 Extensions to Enhance Firefox

ExtremeTech has an article about the extensions they like to use for Firefox. The article covers:

  1. Adblock
  2. Image Zoom
  3. FoxyTunes
  4. easyGestures
  5. Gmail Notifier
  6. Image-Show-Hide
  7. Web Developer
  8. fireFTP
  9. WebmailCompose
  10. Homeland Security Threat Level

I use a couple of those and they make Firefox that much more enjoyable. Of course Firefox was much more enjoyable before I even touched those extensions.

I find easyGestures way too intrusive. I use all-in-one gestures instead.

Also colorzilla is a great companion to the web developer extension.

I’ve had an interesting time exploring extensions. See: Essential Firefox Extensions and the associated comments.

Tried Mc Search Preview? It’s like a turbocharged version of Google Preview. And it works on del.icio.us, Yahoo and A9, too.

  4. JC says:

Diogo! Thanks for that… I can’t count how many times I’ve taken screenshots and opened them in photoshop just to pick a color. Very cool.

I use the page rank and web developer extensions extensively. (I mean can anyone really be bothered to use *two* clicks to view source?) However, I just installed the FoxyTunes and colorzilla plugins and am in love. How did I not know about these before?

  6. Diogo says:

Let’s not forget that the web developer ‘view source’ opens in a new tab instead of the default behavior of opening up a new window that takes over your whole screen and doesn’t let you use mouse gestures. Saving you *one whole click* is just the cherry on top ;)

Speaking of colorzilla I’m still looking for an extension that lets you change font/div colors on the fly by selecting them on the page. The DOM inspector allows you to do this but it’s not intuitive enough, and when you’re working without a fancy WYSIWYG interface you need a fast way to try out different color combinations and make adjustments. Probably wishing too much, but you never know…

  7. JC says:

but… the homeland security threat level? come on! How on earth does that fit in with all those others…. I’d make #10 magpie or something.

    Diogo… EditCSS maybe?

Now if only someone would write an extension for Thunderbird that’d import your settings from the Sage plugin so I don’t have to do them all over by hand…

  8. Diogo says:

The EditCSS sidebar is already present on Web Developer with more or less the same functionality. What I meant by intuitive is to somehow avoid dealing with hex color codes entirely, you’d just click on a section of the page and alter the color through a picker/color wheel.

I’m probably the only one who wants something like this because I’m terrible with color and end up copying and pasting color codes a million times before I get it right.

And btw JC, that color wheel you link to on your page is great ;) (the link needs updating)

  9. Rob says:

Sage makes me all happy. RSS in my sidebar means 1 less app to open.

  10. JC says:

thanks for pointing that out, diogo. I havent even looked at my blog in ages… I do all my posting here. heh.

  11. Kaklz says:

I must say Plain Text Links is a must-have extension. Just a day after I installed it, I can’t live without it :)

  12. Jud says:

Thought I’d let you all know what extensions I am currently using!
    AdBlock
    ieview
    Coralize
    BugMeNot
    WeatherFox
    LiveLines
    Bloglines Toolkit
    Super DragAndGo (my favorite!)

  13. James Colyer says:

Is there a outliner plug-in for FireFox 1.0? One that shows the elements in hiearchial view in the sidebar?

Outliner v0.2 only works up to FF 0.9!

    Thanks!

  14. JC says:

There’s one built into the web developer toolbar… it doesn’t do the sidebar though I don’t think, it actually outlines elements on the page.

  15. jonz says:

Does anyone know of plugin, that lets user select a text, right click and choose: “Save Text As…”?

  16. sanya says:
