There could be something new on the horizon for iTunes:
Paul Mison noticed that iTunes 4.7 is advertising a _dacp._tcp service. It looks like they are preparing to support a remote control type thing. Ed Despard is guessing it’s a “digital audio control protocol.”. (This is from the daap-dev mailinglist, which doesn’t have a proper archive — daap-dev-subscribe at develooper.com to subscribe)

1I’ve seen Ed Despard before he’s a crazy genius mountain man living in the hills of potsdam. Listening to peoples music over iTunes!

2There are already applications that do that, using Applescript. For example, this one.
But the fact that they are preparing to do this may have something to do with iTunes’s limited Applescript support… although I wouldn’t expect Apple to limit support so it can make a better remote than the rest of the world, that’s more something for Microsoft.

4http://sunray.tv has a remote control that lets you send text messages to your mac to control iTunes .. I use it from my pool because that front row remote doesnt work from that far away
