Mothers Against Videogame Addiction and Violence

Funniest site I’ve seen in a while… They continually point to “research” and “fact” that video games are a detriment to society, yet there isn’t a single link to any of this “research” or any of these “fact-proving studies”.

Fact: Hardcore gaming not only leads to video game addiction and abrupt lifestyle changes, but to crime and felony as well. Hardcore gamers never buy computer video games. Instead, downloading illegally copied video games or warez is the only method acceptable by the underground. Buying a legit copy is grounds for abandonment by community groups. You may not be buying your child videogames, but they can illegally obtain them off the internet.

Hahahaha. They make it sound like video game “communities” are a cult that will brainwash your children and turn them into mindless felons!

These “mothers” may be taken a little more seriously if they backed up some of their “facts” with some sort of irrefutable evidence. And didn’t exaggerate and make blanket statements about the gaming “lifestyle”. Hey ladies, I’ve been playing video games since I was 5 years old, and have never committed a crime or killed anyone! I socialize perfectly well with others and actually work out in the public! Am I some sort of fluke, then? Since ALL gamers are criminals and social out-casts? Puh-leeze.

Someone needs to form S. P. A. M. W. T. M. T. O. T. H. “Sane People Against Mothers With Too Much Time On Their Hands”.

Just to be fair to the mothers, the statement about hardcore gamers doesn’t need to be backed up with research for one very simple reason: they never explicitly advance a definition of “hardcore.” However, such a definition is, in fact, given in the very statement you quote. Granted it ends up as a tautology, but try reading the statement as follows:

Hardcore gaming [is defined as gaming that] not only leads to video game addiction and abrupt lifestyle changes, but to crime and felony as well. Hardcore gamers [are defined as gamers who] never buy computer video games.

Seen that way, there is no need to back up what they are saying with studies or evidence primarily because there are bound to be at least some people who meet the criteria. The mothers have merely created phrases that mean what they want them to mean and then used those general sounding phrases in misleading ways.

Not that this makes them any less silly…

I used to be an IGN Insider and on the fourms there was quite an uproar over this site a long while ago. A couple days later it was “learned” that it was actually a couple of gamers behind MAVAV. They were just mocking the Lieberman’s of the world.

Someone will have to do a little more research, but I swear that was the case.

I’d have forgiven the apostrophe in this entry’s title if you were simply copying their mistake, but on their site they use the correct punctuation. That’s right – I’m from ‘Videogamers Against Improper Punctuation And Grammar’ (VAIPAG).

HA! Violence my ass. I’ve played video games since I was a baby. An Atari Joy stick was my pacifier. According to you, I should be a huge bundle of anger, ready to unleash onto anyone who annoys me. Best part? I make excellent grades. Oh and it’s not the video game. It’s because you can’t raise them properly, telling them what’s right and what’s wrong, not teaching them responsibility. You, MAVAV or whatever it is. You guys are FAILURES as mothers.
