The Complete Guide to Pixel Art: For the Completely Ambitious

Because I know you’ve been looking for a reason to fire up MSPaint, I thought you might all enjoy The Complete Guide to Isometric Pixel Art. Aren’t the Linux and Mac users jealous now? Okay, I make fun of MSPaint, but I do love pixel art. It has a great old-school look, and I can definitely appreciate the level of ambition it takes.

Among the tutorial’s fine sections are tools needed (MSPaint, of course), the basic line, creating objects, shading, lighting, and texturing.

Well I hope this tutorial helps spawn artists for some home made RPG projects (and of corse fan RPG’s), because too many of them look a tad lame.

Lovely, I’ve been looking for a guide like this for ages. Pixelfreak also has a good (if short) tutorial and if you want to be impressed take a look at this (warning: big image).

It’s a bit ridiculous to recommend MS Paint for such a task… Sure it works, but there is much better software out there for creating pixel art. I guess the article was just trying to make the cost of entry look low though.

Well, he does mention that Photoshop or GIMP can be used. I think the idea was that anyone with a Windows installation could do it with no extra software needed.

Also, sweet pixel art example, Diogo. I could stare at it for days and still not catch all the little details the artist put in.

Besides MSPaint, you can also use GraphicsGale

    http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/index.html

it support multilayer & animated gif, & very user friendly

however it only support Windows…..is there any great tools for Mac??

This is more or less a question ~ can paint shop pro be used insted of MSPaint?

  7. McKack says:

GraphicsGale just doesn’t have that “simple” feel. Too many tools and stuff bloating it. Even though you can hide everything and move it about and all, it doesnt do it for me. A mix between Photoshop and MS Paint would have been sweet, it’d be my very first project if knew how to code stuff in c++ or whatever.

Pixel tutorials are great, but I’ve just moved to Mac OS 10..
Are there any tools at all out there like GraphicsGale for Mac?
