I am sure most Firefox power-users have seen the optimized builds for the various operating systems. It is also possible to make changes that will increase performance yourself using the about:config panel.
Basically just run Firefox, type about:config in the address bar and use this page as a guide for what you can change for your specific situation (fast computer/slow connection, slow computer/fast connection, etc.).

2Yeah, but this one sucks in different ways than that one sucked: that one failed to realize that network.http.pipelining.maxrequests is clamped to 1-8, this one presents something that made a JS benchmark faster by not doing part of the benchmark as a speed tweak (hint: if changing statusbar text is actually slowing down your browser, you need to switch to Lynx or trade up from your 8086 to an 8088, not tweak Firefox).
