Bring Beauty and Order to Massive MP3 Collections

Maybe iTunes keeps all your music neat and tidy. Good for you. Some of us, however, have large mp3 collections culled before the advent of iTunes. And some us (*cough*me*cough*) are pretty lazy about renaming files and keeping them orderly. With my mp3s barely alphabetized, I might have to follow this guide and use the included tools to organize my mp3s.

The guide includes three Perl scripts for filename beautifying, genre sorting, and WinAmp playlist relocating. I’m not sure how well this works, but it’s probably worth a shot for people that have large, chaotic mp3 collections.

    MusicBrainz.org

Yeah, if you use the MusicBrainz tagger, and run it through all your files, you can set to rename them into Folders, like \My Music\Artist\Album\Artist-Track#-Track Name.mp3. And on top of that, it uniquely tags all of your files, which is handy for use with services like Audioscrobbler.

But surely if you have any sort of ID3 tag in there, iTunes will do all the organising for you? It has whenever I have needed it too.

MusicBrainz does look handy. I might have to look into it.

Also, I don’t use iTunes at all so I’m not sure what its organizing capabilities are.

I have a large music collection too, and I had used foobar2000 for years and kept looking down on iTunes. However, when I finally tried it, I wondered how I lived without it. It has really made my music-listening habits a lot easier and enjoyable. If you haven’t tried it, at least give it a chance. If you’d like to play it safe, create a new partition, copy in a bunch of songs in there, and let iTunes manage that partition’s collection. If you don’t like it, you can always just delete iTunes and that partition.
