I had orginally posted this on my personal site, but thought I would repost it here so that it is available to a wider audience. Instead of reposting the entire thing, I will give a short summary of the problem we encountered and how we fixed it.
After installing the software included with the iPod, we were getting registry errors when we would reboot the computer. I tried uninstalling what came on the disc and downloaded everything from the Apple site. That got rid of the errors, but every time we tried to load songs on the iPod and then listen to them, we got the dreaded blinking green and orange light. I hit the Apple support forums. Found a few references to similar problems. Then it hit me like a brick.
Apparently, the next letter available to the OS for any sort of physical hard drive was E. However, we had a network drive mapped using that letter. Because the iPod Shuffle (as well as the other models) are essentially hard drives, Windows needs to be able to assign a letter to it so that it can write data to it. As soon as I disconnected the network drive, Windows was able to properly assign a drive letter to the iPod and all was well with the world again.
So, a tip if you are using the iPod Shuffle (or possibly any iPod) on a PC. Make sure the next letter in the drive sequence is available for the OS to assign to the iPod.

7The ISScript engine might be out of date on your PC.
I have followed instructions in Step 1 at:
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108340
and it resolved the 1607 error message.

8My ipod generally isnt detected on my pc, any ideas?
February 22nd, 2006 at 11:29 am
9I have noticed that on some Dell models that have the USB ports on the front, the Shuffle will not be detected.
Did you try it on the USB ports on the back of the computer? The difference i guess is direct integration into the motherboard vs. a cable extension to the front ports.
You can also make sure your USB ports are fucntional in the Device Manager.

11I tried to install iPOD shuffle software on my MAC OS X but was unable to install:
1) the iPOD installer software. A window keeps popping up that says “This update requires the Mac OS X Networking Update.” But when I try to go to the Apple web site to download it, I am unable to download any of the updates.
2) iTUNES. when I try to do so, an error message keeps popping up that says “there is nothing to download.” ???
Has this ever happened to anyone else? any advice?
thanks!

12My computer identifies the ipod. I can drag n drop music using My Computer and just putting it on the ipod. Im getting the error message. So, Im guessing I must download itunes? I tried that and this is what I get:
/L language id
/s hide intiatization dialog
For silent mode use: /s
/v/qn
/v parameters to MsiExec.exe
/UA
/UW
/UM
What on Earth does that mean? I have downloaded itunes many times, with the same response. Nothing loads on my computer. All I get is that wierd message.
HELP! Please. Anyone?!

14If your getting the error 1607, try this:
Unregister and re-register the Windows Installer
1. Click Start, click Run, type MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs.
2. Click Start, click Run, type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs, or you may briefly see an hourglass. After you run this command, the operation is complete.
3. Try your Windows Installer-based application again.
After that, I coppied the install to my computer and it ran perfect!!

15Just got a new iPod Shuffle 1 gig. I had a little trouble but finally got iTunes downloaded. The problem is when I plug the Shuffle into the USB port I get the following message USB Device Not Recognized
On of the USB devices attached to theis computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message. When I do that it just says to reconnect the device and if that doesn’t work, replace the device.
When I plug the unit in the light flashes yellow three times and goes off. I tried plugging into another computer and it recognizes the unit but the light still flashes yellow. I am running XP Home w/sp2

18Andrew – I had the same 2869 error. I found that by installing quicktime standalone (without itunes) then re-running the itunes installer, the problem went away – though you have to be patient with the itunes install. See:

20Hey guy,
I just purchased the ipod shuffle 2nd gen. However, after installing the itune, i ran into a write and reading error. I try plugging the usb to the back and it still doesnt work. itune freezes up for moment when i try doing anything to the shuffle, ie when it tries to sync with it the second time. However after uninstalling it I am able to go into the shuffle as a media drive. Help…..

21Can anyone help me please!
I bought an Ipod Shuffle for my wife, we installed the software, it asked us to agree to the legal stuff, we ticked the box daying agree but then we do not appear to be able to move the window far enough across the screen to place our cursor on the ‘next’ box or whatever it is that we have to click on to continue with registration of the Ipod. We are not computer dummies, but whatever we have tried to do simply wont allow us to get to that ’sacred’ box.
Please can anyone help!
Regards Mat Bowman
