Many months ago when I pined for a Gmail account of my very own, I signed up on the Gmail site to receive information and news about Gmail. My secret hope was that this would get me an invite to join. It didn’t. (Of course, I received an invite from someone a long time ago and now have so many invites I shall never find people that want them.)
Imagine my surprise to find an email from Gmail in my Yahoo inbox this morning.

you an invitation to open a free Gmail account!
Does this mean Gmail may go public soon – i.e. allow anyone to register for an account without an invite? Perhaps they’re just targeting Yahoo account holders.
They are either about to end the beta, or make it available to everyone.

Yes, as everyone has been given 50 invites. I actually sent a few and gmail filled it right back up to 50.

Yup, I believe everyone that gave google their e-mail to be notified when gmail was going to be available finally got an e-mail today. I would a reckon that gmail is about a cunt hair away from going public ;-)
I got my e-mail from Google today too. Fortunately, I was able to use a friend’s invite months ago to create my GMail account.
I posted about that this morning too. They’ve also removed that Keep Me Posted link from the about page. When they do go public, I’m sure they’ll get a lot of new users, but they’ll avoid the swarm of traffic they would have gotten if they just opened the gates wide open last April. By using a social network to distribute invitations, they were able to somewhate control the growth of the system, which I’m sure was their intention.
No, that’s wrong. They sent it to everyone who subscribed to invitation (even some months ago).
I thought that it was interesting that Yahoo’s mail service blocks regular Gmail invites by default (sending them directly to the bulk folder), but it allowed this message from Google directly into my Yahoo mail inbox without flagging it. I wonder how long it will be before yahoo (and others) update their “spam blockers” and these end up in the bulk/spam folder too! I guess they are trying to protect their marketshare, but they should just innovate to keep their user base.
And then there was 2000 Megabytes…
