Quicksilver Tutorials

When I got my Mac it was recommended to me by many people that I go and get Quicksilver because it “changes the way you use your computer” or some silly thing like that. Well I did go get it and opened it up and threw it away. I wasn’t in the mood to mess around with settings or try to learn a new app and the default window is a blank screen. Where is the geek in you lugnut? Well it wasn’t with me that day.

However, now I really see the value in Quicksilver after reading these tutorials by Dan Dickinson. He does an excellent job of getting straight to the point of showing you how useful Quicksilver can be. If you haven’t given Quicksilver a try I recommend that you go get it and read these tutorials.

Quicksilver is priceless. I can start ANY application with just about three or four keys: F13 (which I’ve mapped to call QS) and then two or three letters of the App name + return.

My dock has just the bare essentials, the most common apps I run and that’s it.

OMG. A mac app that’s inferior to a windows freeware! Try Bayden Slickrun on Windows. Click or alt-tab it, write first letter (or two), and it launches that app. Since two letters = 676 different combinations, you’ll probably never have to write more than 2 letters.

Lets say you want to check weather: You just type ‘w’ (or if you have another app starting with w, type ‘we’) and it’ll give you another little window. Type your city or zip and it’ll fire up your designated browser and launch the site.

Well, almost.

I can start any application with just two strokes: F13 + first letter of app. QS is smart enough to even remember what the last app I referenced with that key, so if I want to run it again, I don’t even have to type the letter; just F13 (or whatever I’ve assigned to bring up QS) and it’s selected.

If I want to run a different app (or open a file or song or whatever) with the same letter, I type the letter, wait half a second and I get a handy drop down. Scroll down, pick the item and hit enter. My hands have never left the keyboard.

Someday Windows stuff might catch up…
