I don’t know, maybe today is go out and buy a gadget day or something, but I am also getting a digital camera. Why is this important to you? Well now I can do kickass reviews of my toys and have pics with them. Even I hate looking at the frontpage of this site sometimes when it’s all words.
So what digital camera would you recommend? I don’t need one of those prosumer ones since I am not a photography nut. Something simple with high-quality is all I crave. I will also be taking this badboy to the clubs with me at times to snap some pics of the…bar stools…yeah, the bar stools.
Same deal applies to this entry as it did with the laptop entry. If I buy the camera you recommend I will PayPal you $20 for the help. And if you could provide a link that would be really swell (you can use XHTML in the comments).

1I received some cheap digital camera for Christmas and immediately returned it to buy a Canon Powershot SD300.
I had four requirements when buying a digital camera:
1) It had to be small enough to fit into my pocket and durable enough to take a beating at the bar.
2) It had to have at least 3x optical zoom (digital zoom can be done with photoshop).
3) It had to use a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. Digital cameras that use AA batteries eat through them alive.
4) 4 Megapixels. Now I have the ability to print out photos at least 8×10 without losing quality.
This camera has it all, plus some added bonuses. It has video capabilities which I’ve used more than I expected. I have a nice little collection of friends acting stupid which I can use against them when they become public figures. (*chuckle*) You are also able to manually adjust settings such as Sensitivity (ISO), White Balance, Shutter Speed, Exposure control, etc, for the truly photo-geek.
My overall favorite feature is the size. I keep it in my jeans pocket without problems. My cell phone bulges out more. This thing is great and I’m really proud of my purchase.
Added bonus: If you have a friend that works at Best Buy, have them use their discount to pick one up for ya. It’s listed at $399 but they can get it for $330. I used the extra money I saved to buy a 1GB SD Card for it.
Later!

2I have a SONY DSC-T3 and I’m very pleased with it, it has great quality, is smaller than my wallet and has a huge LCD with great quality.
But a picture is worth a 1000 words, so if you want to see some picture I took with it Scrivs go to my blog, the link is in my url.
The biggest downfall of the camera is the price, I payed 500⬠for it… ouch. But I still find it to be worth every peny.

3I’d go with one of the small Canons that Ryan recommended. They are really really tiny, easily fit in your pocket without looking like you have a brick in there. Easy to whip out for some recon shooting at a club. :)

4Paul,
Go with the Powershot SD20… it is the ONLY club-capable camera out there… and I hear chicks dig it. ;)
Not to mention, it’s a sweet 5 megapixels.

5Also, there’s the Nikon Coolpix 3700 — a smaller camera which would better serve as a bar/club accessory. 3.2 MP, 3x optical zoom, brushed aluminum casing, plus it’s only about $130 after rebate. A coworker just bought one and really likes it.

8I have been enjoying and been appreciative for years towards the Canon Powershot S410, which is tiny, yet quite powerful. I’d suggest also at least getting a 256MB memory card for it, which can be found cheap at newegg.com.

9I got a Canon Powershot A75 back around Christmas and have been really pleased with it.

10I enjoy the Kodak EasyShare cameras. Very simple to use, the quality is excellent (4 MP on the model I got my girlfriend recently), and the prices aren’t bad. Also the zoom is pretty good too (don’t get a camera with just digital zoom, it makes everything pixelated). Get an optical zoom on it.

11I just saw Anandtech did a review of the Canon SD300. Looks to be a real sweet camera. I’d go with that. You really can’t go wrong with Canon’s cameras, they’re quality.

12Canon SD300. I’ve had 6 cameras (4 were Elphs) over the last two years and have taken over 15,000 club photos, so I can vouch for it’s durability and low-light effectiveness. I party a lot, and all my friends have converted over to the Elph. The SD20 is slimmer, but the SD300 makes up for it in picture quality.

13My recommendation: Go to http://dpreview.com and check out their reviews. It is a great site and was invaluable when I was looking for a digital camera to replace my aging 1.3MP HP.
I settled on the Canon Powershot A70 (now the A75) because I didn’t feel I needed anymore than 3.2MP and for the price, I got a free 128mb CF card.

14Although I have a Minolta I’m satisfied with, but I’m hearing great stuff about Canon and Nikon camera’s too. So I think it’s more important to look at the qualities you need to look at.
1) As much optical zoom as your money can buy. Digital is meaningless, as you can zoom in digitally afterwards using your computer anyway. In my opinion you’ll want at least 3x optical zoom.
2) One that doesn’t require any special super-duper spacial drivers. What you want is a camera that tells the pc it’s a mass media storage device (like the iPod does). This way you can hook it up to any pc and any iPod Photo (or non-american iRiver H320) as it supports USB-to-go.
3) How expensive are the media cards that the camera uses? Are enough other products using them so they’ll be mass produced for a long period of time? When you buy your camera try to get a good deal on a 128mb+ memory card (get 256mb if it’s affordable).
4) Find out what batteries does it uses. Normal AA or lithium ones?
If it uses AA, get double the number of rechargable batteries you need so they can charge while you shoot away with the other lot. My Minolta uses AA and this setup works great.
Lithium might unhandy since it takes a long time to recharge and they’ll probably need to be in the camera to recharge.
5) Megapixels are great and all, but above 4 the quality is good enough for ‘normal’ photographers. Sure, more is better, but don’t get carried away by salesmen. (Get them to focus on the optical zoom)
6) Size. Smaller may be nicer but usually means crappier photo’s. Of course, who cares for Really Good Photo’s(tm) if it’s a beast of a machine you don’t want to lug around? This is an individual thing, but generally it’s safe to buy a medium sized one.

16go with the Canon powershot a90. by far one of the best non slr digital cameras around. its a bit bulky but the quality and zoom are amazing.

17I have a Nikon Coolpix… I’ve been extremely pleased with it. It has a lithium ion battery and you can bang it against a wall and not worry about it breaking. Picture quality is excellent. I’d reccommend any Nikon Coolpix camera.

18Wow lots of advice. I can attest to the quality of cannon digital cameras, they seem to be of good quality and produce nice sharp images.

19I agree with Ryan on the Canon SD300.
I currently own it and I have to say it’s everything they say it is. Though to take full advantage of the camera you may want to get one of the SD cards that are either 60x or ultras to be able to record videos for the maximum time.

20I’d recommend either IXUS 500 (designed for bar stools, better battery) or PowerShot A95 (more options). With my IXUS 500, i made that excellent photo of my Porsche : )

21I suggest the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P100 (why can’t I find it online?).
It has 5.1 mp, 3x zoom, and a nice display. It is a wonderful camera, and has all the features you’d ever need.
