While surfing around the web I came across this demo application of someone using AJAX to implement a live chat room. Not sure if the page updates for your screen if we are on at the same time, but it is a good way to see AJAX in action.

All this commotion about a dhtml + xml rehash, inevitably a lot of sloppy coding will come of this.
I actually built a very similar program in the past couple of weeks, but I built it to utilize some pretty strong encryption.
-Go here.
-Enter your nickname.
-It will show you a link. Send the link to the friend you want to chat with.
-After they enter their nickname, it’ll connect and you can start chatting.
Depending on the speed of your system, it may warn you that a script is running that might lock your browser. Tell it to keep running (for firefox, at least, that means hitting cancel).
