A while back I posted a link to a site that allowed you to check your Gmail account from your cellphone using a WAP browser.

Here is a tutorial for fowarding your GMail messages to your cellphone, complete with numbers for the major U.S. carriers. If you are in Canada, check the first comment on that site. That reader has given the numbers for some Canadian carriers.
