Based on what I have read, they only do this when it is most likely the first result is what you are looking for.

For instance, if you go to Google and search for Stanford, the first result is for Stanford University. 95% of the time, you are actually looking for that site, so they are playing the law of averages.

One question: If they assume, in some cases, a #1 result is not likely to be clicked… then why is it the #1 result?

This is going to royally screw up stats for site-owners, though, isn’t it?

You won’t be able to tell whether someone even loaded/rendered a page, let alone read it.

On a related note, squid prefetch along with FF prefetch is a good combo. If you’re on a linux box:
