Apple to Ship Mac OS X Tiger on April 29

Looks like the world will stop at the end of the month. In case you forgot or didn’t even know:

Tiger includes new features such as Spotlight, Apple’s advanced desktop search function that scours the computer’s hard disk drive to find documents, e-mail, pictures and music, similar to the way Google searches the Internet.

Looking forward to it. Not sure if I will jump on it right away or wait to see if there are any major bugs that need to be worked out first, but I do know that over time I will be getting it.

Don’t forget that if you pre-order now, it should be at your doorstep by April 29th, but don’t hold me to it.

So… Being new to Mac OS I have two questions:

Will I need to reinstall or is there an upgrade path from Panther?

    And:

If I can upgrade will it negitively affect stability?

  2. Geof Harries says:

    John,

You can either do a clean install (wipe drive and install Tiger) or an Archive + Install, which places all of your previous user files, including preferences, etc. into a safe directory and puts Tiger on as your main o/s. The clean install is always your best bet for the freshest start, but loads of people prefer the latter method.

Bought an ibook 2 weeks ago. Anyone think I can get this update for free?

  5. JC says:

wonder if it’ll support my ibook… 500 mhz g3, first white model.
Or to be more specific, I wonder if it’ll actually run on my ibook (it says it supports it) without crawling

  6. Kelsey Hightower says:

Update only free for new computers on or after the 4/12/05, the day Tiger was announced
