According to this article on Yahoo!, Longhorn will not be ready for its 2006 debut. They give no specific date of just when it will be ready, but 2007 is mentioned at least once.
Haven’t they already decided not to include the WinFS file system in the initial release of Longhorn? Is that still the case or could it be delayed because they are trying to put it back in?
At any rate, the article had this to say about the open-source reaction to a delay:
The open-source world would be ecstatic to have a Longhorn delay,” said Yankee Group analyst Laura DiDio. “They’ll see it as Linux having two years to get its ducks lined up in a row, and more time to erode Microsoft’s market share.

3I *think* this has somthing to do with Bill’s new opinion of bloated code… Up to 4 GB just for XP Prois just freaking sloppy. (I know the minimum is 2 GB but I would like to see that happen)
One way or the other we will get a better product.
if someone else takes over, great.
If windows stops being so damn stupid, great.
Just teach me how to use it and I will support it, I don’t care who makes it.

4I’ve used Longhorn, at least the MSDN builds and it sure is something fancy. But when it comes down to it, it is an over glorified Windows operating system, trying to be an under glorified OS X. Microsoft needs to learn; they may be able to build operating systems, but leave it to the creative people to create all them fun add-ons.
For example Windows did something right with UXTheme, however they failed miserably on creating visual styles that don’t induce vomiting. Now they want to put their own spin on further customization, flexibility, and even widgets. Lord help us.
You can take a pile of dog shit and put it in a glass case, and call it a work of art. But in the end it is no more than what it started out to be, a pile of crap.

7Hey, if linux hasnt succeded in the almost 15 years its been around its not going to, mac osx is head and shoulders above linux in the putting a good face and feel on a *nix type os and the only thing linux has done is cause infighting and argueing about which de and filesystem to use. The only way its going to go anywhere but the boxes of geeks is for someone to say “Look dammit, STFU and pick a central design already”

8If only I could install Mac OS X on a PC, then all my clients could share my joy.
