Not a fan of Springsteen, but I am more interested in the technology behind this.
“Devils and Dust,” the Boss’s 19th album, will only be available in the United States in the fledgling CD/DVD hybrid, which represents the first major change in retail music packaging since the compact disc was introduced more than two decades ago.
The format pairs a standard CD on one side with a DVD on the flip side, which offers video and a surround-sound mix of the album for home theaters.
At the current price of CDs I can see this working out very well. However, if they start to hit the $20s then I don’t think there is a chance in hell of this working out.
The DualDisc generally retails at one dollar more than a CD, and the music industry is hoping it will help recoup the slice of the retail market lost to piracy and illegal file-sharing.
When they say “generally” they usually mean that over time the companies will get greedy and raise the prices up to squeeze out more profits. It’s a good use of technology though to give the fans a better experience.

1Gretchen Wilson’s DualDisc version of Here for the Party has been out for several weeks now. DualDisc is a very cool idea!

2They want to test this idea to combat illegal music downloads–and start out with an album by a guy who’s almost 60? It would make more sense to try this with Britney Spears or something, who’s listeners have to think about buying a CD with a few days worth of lunch money. I’m willing to bet that a majority of the illegal file sharers are under 25, and no one I know at that age listens to Springsteen.

3Isn’t the problem that CDs already cost too much? How is adding $1 to the price going to help?
These guys really don’t know how to do a C-V-P analysis.
