Those crazy scientists are at it again. This time they’ve managed to deliberately induce suspended animation in rats. Using hydrogen sulphide to suspend the rats’ usual demand for oxygen, researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle (WA, US) were able to send the rats’ cells into a state of dormancy for up to six hours.

The scientists theorize that the research could have future applications in the medical world and in space exploration. For now the scientists are focusing on medical applications, and, with that, duplicating the results in larger animals. So far they’ve been able to achieve suspended animation up to twenty minutes in larger animals.
