Billionaire Michael S. Dell, founder and chairman of Dell Inc., has placed a $99.5 million bet on Red Hat.
Dell invested his own money in the Raleigh Linux software developer, taking the largest single chunk of $600 million in debentures offered by the company in January 2004.
With Dell’s continuing interest in AMD’s chips along with Apple’s climb over the last couple of years it’s no surprise that you haven’t heard the phrase WinTel in a while. This is really big for Red Hat and I believe puts them heads and shoulders above Novell with regards to credibility in the corporate world.
Billy Gates definitely can not like this development. But how much, if any, does this help the open source community?

1Governments and workplaces using opensource software can make a bigger impact IMHO than investing 100 million. Why doesn’t he have a Dell that ships with RedHat? I’ll take my foot out of my mouth if he does :)

2It is feasable. Hell, you can cut cost on Windows licensing and turn to open source software. These machines being sold with Linux on them can be sold as “high end servers.” You can increase the retail, while cutting costs at the same time.
Will it be done? Porbable. Will it be done in the near future? Highly unlikely.
