PS3 Faster Than XBox360?
Tuesday, May. 3 2005 | Author: jeremyAccording to this post at Kotaku, the CPU that will be used in the Sony Playstation 3 is up to three times faster than that used in Microsofts’ XBox360. However, all of the processor power may not be usable by games, so that sort of kills that feature.
The good news is that the GPUs of the boxes are about the same, even thought they come from different manufacturers (ATI and Nvidia).

1What does “faster” mean? It really displeases me when chip manufacturers through that term around. The Myth of the Megahertz.
Length of pipeline, actual throughput, frontside bus speed, cache size… all of it matters when you’re interested in actual performance.

2The Cell processor is superior in all those aspects, when it was unveiled a few months ago they compared it to the top P4 XE and it was in some aspects as much as 10 times faster.
The biggest problem I see with the Cell processor, is that since the architecture is brand new, new software needs to be developed from scratch. So when the PS3 is unveiled for the first time, I won’t be surprised if the XBox 3 demo turns out to be more impressive, since they seem to be sticking to a more standard architecture.
On the other hand, porting PC Games to the XBox will probably be much easier since Microsoft wants to bring Console and PC Games closer together.
The best demonstration of the Cell’s power will probably only come when GT5/MGS is released, if Poliphony Digital manages to bring some eye candy to the show, I think it will win the crowd (and fans) over easilly.

3Uh guys, just to comment about the PS3 running circles around the Xbox360 – the PS3’s technical specs have been released, and so has the xbox360. The PS3 with its cell processor has a maximum computing power of 256 gigaflops; the xbox360 can do 1 teraflop. I know you guys know the difference.
The cell has 9 cores running at 4ghz, distributed to all the processing (games, sound, video) while the xbox has 6 cores (3 cores with dual-threading) running at 3.2ghz plus audio plus video. Sony has it here only slightly more than one point.
Sony has a 100ghz bus while xbox has 20ghz bus; though the xbox has 10mb dram embedded onto the chipset so that will make a difference. Sony might have a slight advantage here.
while we await more details on the ps3’s features and specs, the bold and irresponsible statement that the ps3 can “run circles around the xbox” is simply stupid. Sony might have a slight advantage in terms of hardware specs; but when it comes to actual performance – sony’s gigaflops is one fourth of xbox’s teraflop.

4I don’t know where you got your information about the PS3 having a maximum computing power of 256 gigaflops. According to http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050516/sfm178.html?.v=2 (read the article, not the specs – they are incorrect) and multiple other sources, the PS3 will have a computing power of 2 teraflops. The xbox360 can do 1 teraflop. I know you guys know the difference.

6ok hi why is everyone complaining about what the xbox360 and PS3 has? I am glad to see gaming at less get this far. cpu processer I thougth had nothing to do with the image but the video card did. I am not trying to tick someone off but I look for which is going to be the best graphic system I was a ps and xbox gamer. And why so much power they realy are trying to kick the xbox’s ass I think so. The main thing I am worrying about is the cost of the system. I know and you know that both of the PS3 and xbox360 mostly is going to cost out the A. So lets fouce on the thing that matter’s not sides.

7its very hard to compare the two processors. the cell processor only had 1 true core, and 8 SPEs (synergic processing elements) which are controlled by the one PowerPC based core. Basically they provide a lot of extra number crunching. the xbox has three true symmetric cores. i think its going to come down to the skill of the developers

And MICROSOFT in specs wrote 1 TFLOPS.
So i’m lost, for me 1000 GFLOPS = 1 TFLOPS.

9Yes 1000 Gigaflops = 1 Teraflop… to put it in perspective a top (number 2 I think) Super Computer according to top500.org runs at 70 TFlops so to say that a home console system is 1/35 or even 1/100 as powerful as one of the most powerful computers on earth is just crazy.
Saying PS3 was a 2 TFlop machine was all hype, and Microsoft was playing “me to”… and I doubt very much if we will get 218 GFlops out of a PS3 or 115 GFlops out of a Xbox 360,(incidentally the # 500 supercomputer runs at a cool 850 GFlops) but they will both be damn fast, and the PS3 will probably have better graphical processing capabilities, but who is to say at this point who will provide the better user experience? I lean towards Sony because of there track record providing the kind of games I like to play, but that may change.
We are talking Microsoft (Evil, remember?) and Sony (Need I say more?) here, take anything they say with a grain of salt.

10Microsoft are making this console and online USER FRIENDLY, theyve signed up the best game makers and many sont exclusives are coming over too.
as for the processing,
xbox 360’s processors run at around 120 gigflops
ps3 200 gigaflops (not all the power is acesible at one time due to lack of ram)
the one teraflop of the xbox is refering to FLOATING POINT PROCESSING, the power of all the system combined, as for the ps 2 gigflops.
360 WILL run smoother. Sony has tried to hard.

11I strongly doubt that the XBox 360 will run smoother than the 360. Notice that every specification for the PS3 is superior to that of the XBox 360, at least, as far as I can see. Tell me if I’m wrong (but give me proof).

12Although the Xbox 360 may perform 1 teraflop of operations per second, but the PS3 performs 2 teraflops with (8×3.2) ghz of processing speed(1 for the main core itself), dear lord. Not only that but PS3 comes with standard support for 1080p image quality (resolution 1920×1080) using Blu-ray Discs (54GB of gaming content and eye-candy) compared to 720p with dual-layer DVD (9GB) for the Xbox 360. Note that 720p todays standard while 1080p will be the standard for the future for there is no HDTV today that can support 1080p image quality.

13The ps3 is gonna kick some major azz. I love the fact that they are using blu-ray which will possiably be able to hold 100GBs of information. How sweet is that compared to the xbox which will use HD-DVD which will only be able to hold 30GBS MAX. Not to mention the graphics are supposed to be way better. Microsoft is trying to say shit about sonys software??? There just trying to find some way to make their system seem not so bad. The ps3 has nothing to worry about.. Way to go SONY #1

14The processing power of the PS3 over the Xbox will give it an advantage when it comes to better physics and better AI. The actual graphics capabilities are restricted to the quality of the graphics chip, both are closely matched. I think these systems will be closely matched, don’t believe the hype.
Remember when the PS2 was released Sony announced they were having problems sending shipments out because they were classed as “super computers”. It’s all hype, and if you fall for it you will be dissapointed.
The fact that the xbox has online capability won’t attract me, I like to LAN or play single player.

15what would make the xbox an interesting buy would be the ability to install osx tiger on it making it a much better spec’ed mac mini. Better in the processing department, graphics, having standard wifi and bluetooth and a lower cost.

16according to wikipedia, the ps3 gpu is capable of 1.8 tflops, and then a 200 gflops figure for the cpu is probably added to that to achieve an overall theoretical max of 2 tflops. So it sounds like it’s a true 2tflops, but only if you had an app specially tailored to the cpu/gpu combination. The gpu is probably totally worthless for all except the most hardcore of scientific number crunching apps (or ps3 games). There may be some apps where stringing 50 ps3’s would be the fastest supercomputer on earth, which is very cool, but obviously the statistic needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

20I dont get all this hardware stuff but on e3 it sure looked like the ps3 kicked the xbox 360 right in the a$$. I own a xbox and i’m saying this. The killzone looked unbeliveable and and then i hear u guys talk about they wont be able to get the good grafics right off the bat for the ps3.

22Killzone id ps2 stuff and have you guys EVER heard of A GAME even taking up 30Gb really come on to think that a game could take up 100Gb is ludicrous do you know how hard pressed developers are to get their current games completed in time how long would it take to develop a 100Gb game that worked smoothly. Plus CELL architecture is theretical and not complete is was theory that p4s might be able to do 5ghz ive never seen a 5ghz p4

25alrite hey guys why are you all squableing i dont no how to spell the last word i just did (not the point) to be honest im a big xbox fan but i think that ps3 will have addvantages over it but so will the xbox360 but again overall the xbox360 will be better simply because of its power and sleek design and controllers also the online gameplay will probaly beat the ps3 itself single handed…have u actually seen the ps3 its bigger then the xbox and thats huge also the controllers are like friggin bumerangs its massive.

27I am by no means an electronics hardware expert, but how much better can the PS3 be than the 360? ANY game that the PS3 will have can also be on the 360. No matter how many giga and tera numbers you throw in the equation, they are neck and neck. Realize it or not, it all boils down to preference.

With Sony’s specs out, Microsoft has sent us its a comparitive analysis. What’s the outcome?

May 20, 2005 – It’s 3:30 pm on Friday, May 20, the last day of E3. The fine PR folks from Microsoft, who invited us to their headquarters a week before E3 to show us their system, their specs, and the grand design behind their powerful new Xbox 360, have just sent us an urgent notice to update our specs with new information. Earlier in the day, we were sent a comparative analysis of the Xbox 360’s power vs. the PlayStation 3’s power.
We decided to put this Microsoft-provided information up undigested. Thus, enclosed is a Microsoft-made comparitive analysis. We have not altered, added, or tinkered with the data. We have not interpreted the specs. We have cut and pasted this information from the email into our site and formatted it. Make of it what you will, but be clear we know Microsoft has clearly slanted this info, and we’re not endorsing it, just printing their version. There is a difference.
XBOX 360 / PLAYSTATION 3 PERFORMANCE COMPARISON
SUMMARY
Now that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 specifications have been announced, it is possible to do a real world performance comparison of the two systems.
There are three critical performance aspects of a console:
* Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance.
* The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell.
* Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance
* The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU.
* Memory System Bandwidth
* The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3’s by five times.
The Xbox 360’s CPU has more general purpose processing power because it has three general purpose cores, and Cell has just one.
Cell’s claimed advantage is on streaming floating point work which is done on its seven DSP processors.
The Xbox 360 GPU has more processing power than the PS3’s. In addition, its innovated features contribute to overall rendering performance.
Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360’s (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth.
CONCLUSION
When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.
However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 gamesâby leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and servicesâwill outperform the PlayStation 3. CPU
The Xbox 360 processor was designed to give game developers the power that they actually need, in an easy to use form. The Cell processor has impressive streaming floating-point power that is of limited use for games.
The majority of game code is a mixture of integer, floating-point, and vector math, with lots of branches and random memory accesses. This code is best handled by a general purpose CPU with a cache, branch predictor, and vector unit.
The Cell’s seven DSPs (what Sony calls SPEs) have no cache, no direct access to memory, no branch predictor, and a different instruction set from the PS3’s main CPU. They are not designed for or efficient at general purpose computing. DSPs are not appropriate for game programming.
Xbox 360 has three general purpose CPU cores. The Cell processor has only one.
Xbox 360’s CPUs has vector processing power on each CPU core. Each Xbox 360 core has 128 vector registers per hardware thread, with a dot product instruction, and a shared 1-MB L2 cache. The Cell processor’s vector processing power is mostly on the seven DSPs.
Dot products are critical to games because they are used in 3D math to calculate vector lengths, projections, transformations, and more. The Xbox 360 CPU has a dot product instruction, where other CPUs such as Cell must emulate dot product using multiple instructions.
Cell’s streaming floating-point work is done on its seven DSP processors. Since geometry processing is moved to the GPU, the need for streaming floating-point work and other DSP style programming in games has dropped dramatically.
Just like with the PS2’s Emotion Engine, with its missing L2 cache, the Cell is designed for a type of game programming that accounts for a minor percentage of processing time.
Sony’s CPU is ideal for an environment where 12.5% of the work is general-purpose computing and 87.5% of the work is DSP calculations. That sort of mix makes sense for video playback or networked waveform analysis, but not for games. In fact, when analyzing real games one finds almost the opposite distribution of general purpose computing and DSP calculation requirements. A relatively small percentage of instructions are actually floating point. Of those instructions which are floating-point, very few involve processing continuous streams of numbers. Instead they are used in tasks like AI and path-finding, which require random access to memory and frequent branches, which the DSPs are ill-suited to.
Based on measurements of running next generation games, only ~10-30% of the instructions executed are floating point. The remainders of the instructions are load, store, integer, branch, etc. Even fewer of the instructions executed are streaming floating pointâprobably ~5-10%. Cell is optimized for streaming floating-point, with 87.5% of its cores good for streaming floating-point and nothing else.
Game programmers do not want to spread their code over eight processors, especially when seven of the processors are poorly suited for general purpose programming. Evenly distributing game code across eight processors is extremely difficult.

GPU
Even ignoring the bandwidth limitations the PS3’s GPU is not as powerful as the Xbox 360’s GPU.
Below are the specs from Sony’s press release regarding the PS3’s GPU.
RSX GPU
* 550 MHz
* Independent vertex/pixel shaders
* 51 billion dot products per second (total system performance)
* 300M transistors
* 136 “shader operations” per clock
The interesting ALU performance numbers are 51 billion dot products per second (total system performance), 300M transistors, and more than twice as powerful as the 6800 Ultra.
The 51 billions dot products per cycle were listed on a summary slide of total graphics system performance and are assumed to include the Cell processor. Sony’s calculations seem to assume that the Cell can do a dot product per cycle per DSP, despite not having a dot product instruction.
However, using Sony’s claim, 7 dot products per cycle * 3.2 GHz = 22.4 billion dot products per second for the CPU. That leaves 51 – 22.4 = 28.6 billion dot products per second that are left over for the GPU. That leaves 28.6 billion dot products per second / 550 MHz = 52 GPU ALU ops per clock.
It is important to note that if the RSX ALUs are similar to the GeForce 6800 ALUs then they work on vector4s, while the Xbox 360 GPU ALUs work on vector5s. The total programmable GPU floating point performance for the PS3 would be 52 ALU ops * 4 floats per op *2 (madd) * 550 MHz = 228.8 GFLOPS which is less than the Xbox 360’s 48 ALU ops * 5 floats per op * 2 (madd) * 500 MHz= 240 GFLOPS.
With the number of transistors being slightly larger on the Xbox 360 GPU (330M) it’s not surprising that the total programmable GFLOPs number is very close.
The PS3 does have the additional 7 DSPs on the Cell to add more floating point ops for graphics rendering, but the Xbox 360’s three general purpose cores with custom D3D and dot product instructions are more customized for true graphics related calculations.
The 6800 Ultra has 16 pixel pipes, 6 vertex pipes, and runs at 400 MHz. Given the RSX’s 2x better than a 6800 Ultra number and the higher frequency of the RSX, one can roughly estimate that it will have 24 pixel shading pipes and 4 vertex shading pipes (fewer vertex shading pipes since the Cell DSPs will do some vertex shading). If the PS3 GPU keeps the 6800 pixel shader pipe co-issue architecture which is hinted at in Sony’s press release, this again gives it 24 pixel pipes* 2 issued per pipe + 4 vertex pipes = 52 dot products per clock in the GPU.
If the RSX follows the 6800 Ultra route, it will have 24 texture samplers, but when in use they take up an ALU slot, making the PS3 GPU in practice even less impressive. Even if it does manage to decouple texture fetching from ALU co-issue, it won’t have enough bandwidth to fetch the textures anyways.
For shader operations per clock, Sony is most likely counting each pixel pipe as four ALU operations (co-issued vector+scalar) and a texture operation per pixel pipe and 4 scalar operations for each vector pipe, for a total of 24 * (4 + 1) + (4*4) = 136 operations per cycle or 136 * 550 = 74.8 GOps per second.
Given the Xbox 360 GPU’s multithreading and balanced design, you really can’t compare the two systems in terms of shading operations per clock. However, the Xbox 360’s GPU can do 48 ALU operations (each can do a vector4 and scalar op per clock), 16 texture fetches, 32 control flow operations, and 16 programmable vertex fetch operations with tessellation per clock for a total of 48*2 + 16 + 32 + 16 = 160 operations per cycle or 160 * 500 = 80 GOps per second.
Overall, the automatic shader load balancing, memory export features, programmable vertex fetching, programmable triangle tesselator, full rate texture fetching in the vertex shader, and other “well beyond shader model 3.0″ features of the Xbox 360 GPU should also contribute to overall rendering performance.
Bandwidth
The PS3 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and 25.6 GB/s of RDRAM bandwidth for a total system bandwidth of 48 GB/s.
The Xbox 360 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and a 256 GB/s of EDRAM bandwidth for a total of 278.4 GB/s total system bandwidth.
Why does the Xbox 360 have such an extreme amount of bandwidth? Even the simplest calculations show that a large amount of bandwidth is consumed by the frame buffer. For example, with simple color rendering and Z testing at 550 MHz the frame buffer alone requires 52.8 GB/s at 8 pixels per clock. The PS3’s memory bandwidth is insufficient to maintain its GPU’s peak rendering speed, even without texture and vertex fetches.
The PS3 uses Z and color compression to try to compensate for the lack of memory bandwidth. The problem with Z and color compression is that the compression breaks down quickly when rendering complex next-generation 3D scenes.
HDR, alpha-blending, and anti-aliasing require even more memory bandwidth. This is why Xbox 360 has 256 GB/s bandwidth reserved just for the frame buffer. This allows the Xbox 360 GPU to do Z testing, HDR, and alpha blended color rendering with 4X MSAA at full rate and still have the entire main bus bandwidth of 22.4 GB/s left over for textures and vertices.

Lastly, we were sent updated spec numbers on the Xbox’s numbers, and we spoke with Microsoft’s Vice President of hardware, Todd Holmdahl, about the Xbox 360’s final transistor count.
Another bit of information sent our way is the final transistor count for Xbox 360’s graphics subset. The GPU totals 332 million transistors, which is spit between the two separate dies that make up the part. The parent die is the “main” piece of the GPU, handling the large bulk of the graphics rendering, and is comprised of 232 million transistors. The daughter die contains the system’s 10MB of embedded DRAM and its logic chip, which is capable of some additional 3D math. The daughter die totals an even 100 million transistors, bringing the total transistor count for the GPU to 232 million.

31After reading all the posts and numbers(which gave me a headache) hardly anyone spoke of the most important factor—that is Online gameplay. Lets say Sony does have a slight edge in the hardware department.SO WHAT!
They are still light years behind xbox live.

I have ps2 online (which i only play Final Fantasy) and i have Live and unless Sony can wave that wand and come up to speed. the hardcore gamer is not gonna be puting serious time into PS3. You guys obviously dont know about xbox live.

The X360 has 3 symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz, and that’s far more efficient than just one core with 7 extra little helpers.

The PS3 has less than one-fifth of system memory bandwidth from the Xbox360.
BTW, floating point performance (TFLOPS) isn’t really that important in gaming.
Plus, the Xbox360 GPU has unified architecture, has 48 shader pipelines (compared to PS3’s supposedly 24 or 36 pipelines), and is capable of doing 80 shader operations per second compared to PS3’s 74.8.
The Xbox360 GPU also has this 10 DRAM embedded.

41Seriously, the XBOX360 looks like the champ if we just look at the hardware specs, also the memory bandwidth on the XBOX360 looks good, I just want to know what the CPU specs are for the PowerPC Chip in the XBOX360 and whether or not Linux will make it to the XBOX60, this could be the cheapest entry computer on the market, with 3 USB ports etc. Does the damm thing have a large HD, Im impressed with 512MG RAM for a console! But Id be more impressed if these machines had SLOTS like PC’s for upgrading the GPU’s and other stuff. I bet this sells for £299 UK when it comes out! It would be interesting if Apple brought out MAC OS X for the XBOX360.

42Any one who claims that Xbox 360 is the stronger of the 2 consoles is an idiot. First of all the only reason that any one would think that Xbox360 is more powerful is because of that major nelson report. but the fact is, that report was biased…the ps3 Gpu is faster and stronger than the xbox gpu. The only reason one would be fooled into thinkin that 360 gpu is stronger is because of the 48 pipline. The numbers are misleading because the 24 pipelines on the Rsx are actually much stronger than 48 because the Rsx architecture is more based of computer hardware. if you dont bbelieve me …take a look at any game developers opinions on the systems graphical power…all of them agree that the ps3 is the system to go with. And need i remind you that the ps3 Gpu kicks 360 gpus ass in many more ways…for ex Combined with the cell the ps3 can do 21 millions dots/ sec while the 360 only 33 mill/sec and the ps3 is clocked at 550 mhz while 360 is at 500 mhz.Sony can also support 1080p while the 360 can only support 1080i.360 can oly do 48 billion shader operations per second while ps3 does a whopping 100 billion shader ops/ sec.
As far as the Cpu goes…Much has been said on the difference between the two machines’ noggins, some biased towards the Microsoft and others towards Sony. The CPU in the latter has more going for it in terms of “core” hardware but the former’s cores – while fewer – are more powerful. According to game designer Nick Harper,
The cores really place the power in the hands of developers. The Xbox 360 has 3 running at 3.2GHz each, the PS3 has seven apparently. buffer. This allows the Xbox 360 GPU to do Z testing, HDR, and alpha blended
color rendering with 4X MSAA at full rate and still have the entire main bus
bandwidth of 22.4 GB/s left over for textures and vertices.

66Its sad that people are arguing about which is better.. obviously if one is better it really wont matter for about 3 or 4 years after both consoles are released.. when they find out just how much power each console is capable of.. compare Halo 1 to Halo 2… no doubt one console will be slightly better.. but with that much power both consoles have.. and both supporting HD and all that… the difference won’t be all that great.. or really worth arguing about.. and since more and better games was always the argument of every ps2 fanboy when someone said xbox was better.. It appears the tables have been turned… Xbox now has the gta series, the final fantasy series, the perfect dark series, Halo, fable,Dead or Alive series, etc.. some might become 3rd party soon.. but still its just going to come down to software.. not just hardware..
Plus.. since xbox can have the harddrive and all that.. and it supposed to use that as extra ram… does that change the numbers a bit.. or do those numbers include the harddrive…
I think they should just f-ing run Aquamark 3 on them both to compare the stats.. f-ing easier that way..

70I think you should considered the Dev kit the the developers use cuz they don’t use the console to make game. so if the cell processor is fast that mean the game developer can make it faster cuz of the cell processor but they just have to learn how to use it first. at first it would be defficult for them because they have to relearn on how to use the dev kit just like the ps2 dev kit but in the end they might end up make a good game for the ps3.
in the other hand the xbox360 is just like a PC
it easy to use but if the Dev kit is slow that mean when they generate got game or making the map would be slow or lag let. cuz i have a computer that high end to day and i think it still too slow for making game. Cuz when i try to make the map for Facry it has to load all the texture and stuff every time i have to change some thing wich is take very long time cuz it has to put whole bunch of lighting and calculate where the ligh should be so my opinion is that the xbox360 or console is doesn’t matter it the devkit that the developers use if they provide the same spec as the console that mean they can make that game that can use the full advantage of the devkit which will be use on the game console.

72im going to get the REV anyway but i always thought the PS3 was the most powerful, after doing a little research i found out that SONY likes to talk alot of BS.
The PS3 cannot do 2.1TFLOPS. The PS3 has a very powerful CPU using 0.10 Micron technology but the GPU is using 0.18 Micron technology just like all the other consoles. The PS3 is based on the Nvidia 7800 GTX, this is a very powerful graphics card that uses 0.11 Micron technology (the smaller the better).
The 7800 GTX memory runs at 38.4GB/s thats almost twice the speed of the PS3’s memory. Some people get confused because the 7800 GTX’s clock speed is at 430 and the PS3 is at 550Mhz. This is the same as comparing a 1.3Ghz pentium3 to a 1Ghz Pentium4 and yo u should know tha the 1GHz P4 would be more powerful.
The Nvidia 7800 GTX can perform a total of 312.4 GFLOP/s, they say the PS3’s GPU can perform 1800 GFL0PS (Not true),
For argument sake lets say the PS3 could perform 312.4 GFLOP/S just like the 7800. Add this to the CPU performance of 218 GFLOPS and you have a total of 512 FLOPS thats almost half of the power of the X360. though bare in mind that x360 could have lied a bit about their specs too.
Realisticly the PS3 can perform a about a total of 300 GFLOPS/s (in games).
I believe the X360 will do the same, ATI make
Graphic cards more practical then NVIDIA, NVIDIA just try to show off, thats why the Quadro FX 4000 cannot render FMV’s as fast as even a Radeon 900

75K I have a ps2 xbox and a gamecube but the point i want to hear is between the xbox 360 and the ps3 which is better ? in my opinion im buying the xbox 360 on launch date and i think the online for xbox360 is going to be better then ps3 because they had experience. when halo 2 came out i bought the xbox just for that game and pefect dark zero looks really good.
but what about halo 3 will it kick kill zones2 ass or what. also another point of mine is the games for the ps2 like san andreas and final fantasy has moved to xbox 360 so most of the square nix fans and gta. 80People get real. PS3 is much more powerful than the X360. X360 has a total of three cores, whereas PS3 has 1 main core and 7 SPEs. Now each of those SPEs might not be fully utilized at launch, but high-end PCs are going in the trend of these processors, and soon after developers should be in the trend too.
Think about a single operation that requires more than one pass on the CPU- how about one with 9? All three of the cores on X360 would be used three times while PS3 would have used it a little more than once.
If developers want to milk as much out of the PS3 as they can, that processing power could be used so the slightest bit of debris in an explosion wouldnât just be an animation, but have itâs own true-to-life physics to command the square inch it fell.
X360âs DVDs seem like itâs enough for the current gen, but a 54 Gig Blu-Ray disc holds the space needed to store higher quality character models, larger worlds, and the operations the PS3 can run, like each member in a 70-man army having their own unique details and AI, or something to the extent.
X360 really is a rubbish PC in a white box. COD looked jaggier on 360 than it did on the PC, and thatâs a fact.

If you really want to discuss Sony’s lack of performance due to lazy developers(just because the SPEs may not be fully utilized), Developers may to the same to the other two cores on 360.
High-end PCs use multiple core processors, and developers will get used to them, there’s no reason why they won’t end up utilizing all seven SPEs during the PS3’s timeframe.

82If the 360 is so much better and there is so much more power, then what is with the difference in the screenshots? The games that are already released for the 360 are nothing special. You have the same games that can be played now at a slightly higher resolution at a slightly higher framerate.
Look at games that aren’t even finished that will be on the PS3 and look at the difference. Look at the high res videos for the PS3 and you can see the difference between a jump in framerate and a jump between generations of games.
Look at the tech demos for the PS3. I don’t see the 360 dynamically rendering volumetric explosions on the fly. And if the 360 is so powerful why are they running at 720p at 60fps when the PS3 can run 1080p at 120fps? Well I guess when the time rolls around the unlucky 360 owners could just change their settings to 1080 INTERLACED. Hah
Personally I think the 360 MIGHT be a system worth owning… Maybe… But the PS3 is definitely worth owning. If you honestly sit down and look at the quality of the games beteween the two systems there is no way you can say the 360 is better than what the PS3 will be. If you do then you are just a halo fanboy who lives under a rock. (nothing against halo mind you)

84first of all…im sick of everyone dissing sony for saying sony hyped up the “emotion engine”. ya its not a processor of this time but for its time it was a beast of a processor. think about how much has changed since then. i mean there wasnt even 1ghz processors. ya maybe it only ran at 300mhz but it was also a 128 bit processor compared to microsofts 733mhz 32bit. it still ran just as fast and produced good graphics for that kind of processor. also microsoft had what a 2 year advantage? the way technology is changing 2 years should have put microsoft way ahead of ps2 not just a little. i mean when xbox was released it was slower than home computers. i have both the xbox and ps2 and i like them both. the only thing that sets microsoft apart is their LIVE service.
both of the new systems are going to be beasts. o and by the way there is no reason to compare memory bandwidth between the PS3 and 360. they both have very different memory structures. while the 360 has a shared 512megs @ 700mhz ps3 has a dedicated 256mb of xdr ram @3.2ghz for the processor and a dedicated 256mb gddr3 @700mhz for the video. While Microsoft needs a 256GB p/s bus to its EDRam the PS3 doesnt even have EDRam… it uses a different interface which only needs 22.4GB p/s bus.
im sick of all this talk from people trying to compare the hardware specs. they are totally different hardware and we will have to see when they come out which is better. on paper sony has more power but it will all depend on how the developers can develop games. by the time ps3 is released 360 may already be into second generation games such as halo3 and have better graphics. but the thing that sony has an advantage is its blu-ray technology. people say who need 54gigs for a game. the game may not take that much space but the 54 gigs really gives room to expand the environmental detail not so much as the graphics.

85The EDRAM is only useful for AA or AF, it can’t be used for polygon drawing or textures since its way to small. This will help the system not take a performance hit when doing AA/AF but the system is still limited by the amount of textures and graphics data it can preform while doing all other aspects.

86I’ve played the 360 and its pretty impressive….BUT some high end pc gamers will tell you they can spot jaggies a mile away..and tho im not at all a pc gamer i can spot those same jaggies. the graphic quality is pretty good and the gameplay is descent in most games but they totally rushed the system! another point is….it doesnt look real like the next-gen consoles are telling us they should. look at the trees for instance. for me…i wanna see some impressive environments like trees and grass. sony is using a technology speedtreeRT which makes trees and environments look real! microsoft on the other hand still looks like somewhat less realistic environments

90Sony Doesn’t require high bandwidth or a fake me out cache system because it can do 5 real processes in the time it takes the xbox360 to do one jackass x86 process. Ps3 Skips the bull shit. 92Great threads guys. I will probably buy both of them, how’s that for ruining competition. It seems to me that ps3 is better than the 360 in most ways. But I mean 1080p over 1080i, the difference is minimal and since these consoles may only last 3-4 years before they are back asking for more of our money I doubt it matters. Most people won’t have TV’s by that point that show the difference. The only problem I have with the 360 is the lack of Blu-ray or similar tech. Some ignorant person wrote who could ever use 100gig. Get a life. Look at how much games took up just 5 years ago and look now. This trend is not linear my friend. Microsoft tries to sell the 360 as the end all media-center but without HD DVD they are a lame duck.

The PS3 does NOT use a PowerPC based core, that is the 360.
The Xbox 360 is running with a more adavanced hardware system. The PS3 has ONE core, do you all get that. ONE CORE, and that one core has seven SPE’s helping it, the Xbox 360 has THREE cores. Each core of both systems running at 3.2 Ghz. Due to the tripple core in the 360 it is 50% higher in general performance, the 360 also has twice as much Bus speed, as well as more memory. Don’t compare the hardware unless you know something about computers.

To sum up the important stuff regarding XBL:
There will be two versions of Xbox Live. Silver is free (everyone gets it), and Gold is a paid subscription, like the current XBL. It looks like Xbox Live will be free on the weekends for everyone; Gold members will get it all the time, obviously. Current Xbox Live accounts will carry over to the 360 and become Gold Xbox Live accounts. Both Gold and Silver members will be able to download demos, trailers, and other content through XBL.
This info seems pretty legit, and some insiders have confirmed that this is indeed a real leak. At this rate, you have to wonder if Microsoft will have anything left to reveal at the MTV unveiling on May 12.

104Lol very funny the guy who posted the Microsoft report on whether the Xbox 360 will be better than the PS3! Theres no way that Microsoft would maybe lie about sonys console to get more sales, and vice versa. From what Ive read the PS3 outproforms or matches the Xbox 360 in every sector, however I think that both consoles are serverely over hyped and face facts even if the consoles are better than todays pcs when they come out how long do you think it will take for pcs to copy and inprove on the hardware? Plus Microsoft and Sony will probably be releasing consoles to the end of time at this rate. We are a bit luck that Bin Laden didnÂŽt ear the the ceo of ps2 talking about it or the world was gone already. 1st point, I have the 2 consoles XBX and PS2 and xbox itÂŽs better. I will only take some conclusions when the two can be compared side by side. And one more thing, if U guys are really gamers, remember that it isnÂŽt hardware that makes a good game.

ok 107. No the technology is not out. because it hasnt been released yet. go to IBM.com and look up the white papers on the subject. Guess what. When companies develop and brand new product… and haven’t released it… it’s not out yet. When they release it… it’s out… understand? Alright. Yes the PS3 is using a powerpc based core, unlike what you said. Oh and the 360’s “third core” is on the video card. But with your ineffable wisdom I’m sure you knew that. Oh and by the way… the 7 SPE’s do not “help” the core. The 7 SPE’s do the processing. The tasks are divided up and they do the processing. 7 pipelines instead of one. Plus the RSX. Do you know what distributed computing is? Well now it is all going to be done in hardware. With your amazing ‘computer smarts’ I’m sure you know that makes things alot faster.
And by the way I like the 360 too. I just can’t stand people sometimes.

110i6 % of all xbox 360 are faulty as they either dont work or destroy the disk and repeatedly shut down ps3 is the best anyway 360 has actually set thousands of fire though the heat it produces the ps3 on the other is able to run cool and is 3 times the xbox 360 and is smaller and safer

PS3 = long term next-gen
what i mean is…. Sony has been with ‘video gaming’ for a while, they have previous experience with the PS and all…. so they know what they’re doing… however, PS3 is made for prolly PAST 2010… becuz everybody cannot offord a PS3 and use it to its best capabilities (i.e. HDTV, surround sound, lots of game on $70+ dollar discs)
xbox 360 however, is a lot better for the near future.. perhaps UP TO 2010 because we can offord the 360 and use it on regular, current gen entertainment ’stuffs’ (i.e. regular stero, (not HD)TV etc..) and for next gen ….
360 also has a HUGE advantage over PS3 based on memory, cache and customizations… these options will be boosters for other categories too like GPU and CPU
PS3 is just all crazyass hardware stuffed into a machine as a REPLY to xbox360…. it has almost no customization, expensive as hell, and the system will most likely crash after a while because it uses soo much power from CPU and GPU without lots of space into cache and memory….
in the end, SONY is made for entertainment not for videogaming…. and MICROSOFT for software
leave nintendo for the video games …. and leave the world in peace….T_T

116My 360 always fucking frezees and I already replaced it 4 times my PS2 broke once after 3 years of playing it 4 times in 6 months that is bullshit and as for PS3 and the 360 it all comes down to the games and sony is way ahead as far game sales. Ghost Recon or Oblivion couldn t even outsell kingdom hearts 2 fucking shame a PS2 title. You xbox pussy fan boys should remember what sony has done for gaming and should appreciate it.

125I like to say that i am both fan of ps3 and xbox360 both system will do good but dont for get back in the days whan ps1 came out with the 32bit and the nintendo came out with the n64 and still the ps1 turn out better in the end ps had good years from the ps1 to the ps2 but now their is a new kid on the block that is the xbox so if sony dont be on their gard xbox will be number 1 it is not like sony vs sega it is sony vs its down fall because xbox can do as well as sony any day from a scale from 1 to 10 i give sony a 10 and give xbox a 9.9

129look if u wnt to get a game system that is good for its internet play then the x box 360 is for u,however if u wnt to get a game system that is best for its games and graphics then ps3 is the one for you. in my opinion ps3 is better because of its games nd graphics. 130118 — Yea, Sony gave us the Playstation… how nice. They are a shady company and like all companies are only concerned with the bottom figure.
If you really want to give props to a company for gaming, you should be giving iD Software your praise. They have done more for modern gaming that any other single company that comes to mind with Wolf, Doom, and Quake. I’m talking about technology…. not the IP’s themselves.
