Some of you may be familiar with the anime, the quirky main character and the (exaggerated) fights of course. In those aspects, the movie resembles it’s television counterpart very little.
The movie has alot of drama, and very little of the action you’re used to seeing in the series. It starts off with a young boy, that is taught the art of a powerful sword fighting style and then decides to use it to try and bring peace and fairness to everyone.

Author: Watsuki Nobuhiro
Director: Furuhashi Kazuhiro
Year: 1999
Distributor: ADV Films (Known as Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal on their website)
ADVFilms’ introduction to the film:
"Nineteenth century Japan: a land torn by rebellion and civil warfare; small bands of soldiers roam the land, seeking to overthrow the tyrannical Tokugawa Shogunate. Enter the young orphan Kenshin, trained as a fighter by the master swordsman Hiko. Kenshin’s desire for peace is at odds with his brutal life, and the tension seems unreconcilable until he meets a mysterious woman named Tomoe. The enigmatic Tomoe’s actions may show Kenshin that another life can exist for him, or may instead conceal a destructive secret. Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal Director’s Cut follows the progress of the rebellion against the Shogunate and the complex evolution of Kenshin’s and Tomoe’s involvement, and reveals how Kenshin received the distinctive cross-shaped facial scar that gives the film its name."

The character Kenshin, and Tomoe (which you may recall hearing in the series) are exploited to their fullest, you learn of their past and present, their feelings and wishes, and as the movie entitles, they learn how hard it is to trust and the hurt of betrayal, the directors harness every drop they could of their emotions, and it’s very rare to see anime characters that look and feel so palpable and human.
Even if you’re not a Rurouni Kenshin fan, watch this movie, it’s one of the best unheard of anime classics of all time and it will not fade in the mind of those that see it.
My rating? From one to ten, definitely, ten.

1The sword technique is “Hiten Mitsurugi Style” (sp?) in english, not sure of the original form. This is a good prelude to Rurouni Kenshin, although it takes the title “Samurai X”, along with 2 other OVA’s. It can be watched independently and even after watching the 96(!) episode series.

2Yes it is, and that translation is correct. I’m not sure if I recommend watching before or after the series.
If you watch it before, you’ll see some of the events with a different perspective.
If you watch it after you’ll think about the series and understand the how and why of the outcome of Kenshins personality throughout.
Either way, it’s a great movie.

5I recommed watching it before the series, it helps explain what made kenshin the kind of person he is, and why he left the name battousai behind. I think it’s a grea movie, and very dramatic; so it’s not for people who cry really easy
