Matt thinks that Google has a wider search box now, but I am not quite sure since I use Firefox’s search bar. Can anyone confirm?
If they do I don’t think it’s a usability issue, but a way to add more tabs in the future without looking like they are crowding things up.

1Looks the same as always to me, but I did some extra investigation. A comparison of today’s search box size to that of March 2003 shows them to be the same.

2I do know that a few weeks ago they moved the placement of the Google logo. It is closer to the top of the page now…and farther away from the search box and links. That may give the impression that it is longer. Whitespace can play tricks on the eye.

3They got rid of the “New” that was next to Local and it caused the search box to appear wider in relation to the text above.

5In 2003 the search bar size was 256. Today, the search bar size is still 256.
