open source versus has done a comparison of a XP system, Ubuntu system, and a SUSE 9.3 system. They lay out screenshots of comparable tasks that can be done on each system to see which one looks prettier I suppose.
However, all this comparison did for me was disappoint because it shows how similar Linux desktops are with Windows desktops. This is a good thing I suppose if you want people to make a comfortable transition, but to me it shows lack of innovation. I am sure many of the Linux developers think the desktop paradigm presented by Windows can be improved upon, so it confounds me as to why they would do an almost exact duplicate of the system.
Gnome isn’t as bad as KDE with this since it uses a combination of Windows and Mac features, but still. All of this bitching makes me think I need to write an article on what can be improved with current desktops and try to think of a paradigm of my own.

1I really wanted to see them compare Windows ability to play something like Half-Life 2 versus Linux’s, or maybe Doom 3.

2that would be awsome… cuz im using windows and HL2 has its share of MAJOR-FATAL-DEATHLY…. errors… alot of my friends never have these problems and i think its my windows installation….. but anyways linix vs windows playing games would be a great way to get gamers on Linux (im rooting for linux)

3I’m using Suse Linux 10.0 and Windows XP on the same machine. Today I made a benchmark with Doom3 (High Details, 1280×1024).
D3 Windows got 92,1 FPS
D3 Linux got 81,1 FPS
If my mind doesn’t make me a joke, I mentioned in the Linux High Detail Mode a better looking texture than in the Windows Version. I think it was because of the nvidia-driver.
HL2 is only playable under linux by using an Emulator like wine. So I don’t think HL2 under linux got a good performance (or a better than windows).
But if I want to play D3, Quake4 or Neverwinter Nights I play them under Linux, because it’s easy installed and give myself a nice dream from a better OS-World.
