It should be no surprise that we do not plan on releasing IE7 for Windows 2000. One reason is where we are in the Windows 2000 lifecycle. Another is that some of the security work in IE7 relies on operating system functionality in XPSP2 that is non-trivial to port back to Windows 2000.
Not sure how this effects anyone at all, but it’s kind of lame for Microsoft not to backport a vital piece of software to an operating system that is only one generation old.
This will either push IT admins to move to XP/Longhorn or Firefox. Let’s hope they go with Firefox unless of course there are ActiveX applications they are using.

1I honestly wouldnt have bothered using IE7 even if it was available to my windows os of choice. Its nice of microsoft to shut out a good load of users from using the latest version of their web browser, it might lead to further adoption of firefox/other decent alternate browsers.
Lets hope someone writes an activx emulator one of these days.

2IE blows, it’s only used because it comes with Windows. If it weren’t then the usage would be down to 50% for sure, and falling.

3WHAT!? You mean I won’t be FORCED to use IE7? You mean, they actually want Win2K users to use Firefox?
