Even though this number of songs is “big”, it’s nowhere near the number of iPods that Apple has sold.

It’s the same as Sony advertising that they’ve sold 100k UMD films (or some similar number) when in reality it isn’t a great achievement, just free advertisement.

Almost makes me wish I had an iPod and downloaded songs from iTunes

You don't need to get an iPod to download songs from iTunes. You just need a computer and an internet connection.
You may find it usefull the day you'll start paying for your music.
