My entries as of late are making me look like a regular Google fangirl. But I can’t help that people keep creating cool apps with Google APIs, and I have to pass them on. My latest find is GMaps Pedometer. GMaps Pedometer uses Google’s mapping functionality to record distances travelled in running or walking workouts.
Basically, zoom into your area and start recording. Double-click points along your workout path and GMaps Pedometer will highlight your path and keep a running total of distance travelled as well as the distance between legs (points) on your path.

This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. As a road cyclist I’ve always wanted to chart distances for new routes before heading out.
Since the system seems to use latitude/longitude coordinates to determine distance between points, it doesn’t appear to account for distance over varying elevation (like climbing up a mountain) — but for what it does, it certainly is good enough for estimating ride distances.
Thanks for pointing out the link.
I was looking at the US map at Gmaps Pedometer. What kind of crazy way of doing things do they have at Google: the entire states of Indiana and New Jersey have been satellite photographed and huge swaths over other states have not been photoed at all.
And look at Ireland (all of western Europe actually): photos here and there and not other places.
This is amazingly good, It works in Delhi, India too and I can chart the distances I do on my bicycle and this is greatssssss.
Another good site example for Google Maps (to calculate how far) is GPSies.com.
