Longhorn To Become Windows Vista

According to MicrosoftWatch and ActiveWin, you can expect an announcement tomorrow that Windows Longhorn will officially be named Windows Vista.

The official new name for the Longhorn operating system is Microsoft Windows Vista, according to our insider sources. The name was mentioned today at the Microsoft sales conference in Atlanta. The official announcement will go live at 6 AM PST.

Endgadget brought up the fact that Vista is meant to refer to “a view into the distance”, which it points out must reflect the long development timeline of the OS.

Not digging the new name. Personally I like “Longhorn” way better. It might just be because I’m accustomed to “Longhorn”, though.

  2. J44xm says:

Yeah, I prefer LH over “Vista” too. Not that LH is that great as much as “Vista” rather sucks as a name.

  3. LSW says:

Personally I thought Longhorn was a step down from “Palledin”, Vista is downright sorry for a OS name.

  4. Griffith says:

Vista is how you say “Sight” in Portuguese. So the by-the-letter translation of Windows Vista is Windows Sight.

  5. Adross says:

See, this is why I like linux, cool name.
I mean, it has the letter ‘x’ right in there. At the end as well, so it stands out.

  6. Joel Padot says:

Ok… This just suggests that MS is run by a whole bunch of old guys. How poetic a name is Vista? I’m in Florida so I think of lake Buena Vista. Windows isn’t a resort in my mind.

I think I’ve figured out the appeal I find in Linux. It doesn’t get old. I mean, Windows Vista. If I actually have to ask people what version they have, (98, XP, Vista) I’m gonna chuckle everytime I pop the question.

Bottom Line: I Can’t Believe they would go with something so boring.

  7. Sunny says:

Vista. Sure beats Stillborn, I mean Longhorn.

  8. Griffith says:

They should name it something cooler like Panther! Oh, wait…

  9. Nicole says:

This reminds me of a couple years ago when I heard that the new NFL expansion team in Houston would be called the Texans. Millions of dollars were most likely spent, and that’s the best they could come up with?
