I had been planning on doing a review/comaprison of two FTP clients for Mac, Transmit and Fetch. I had used Fetch briefly back in college, but have pretty much been a fan of Transmit for a few years now.
Fetch released a new version a month or so ago that seemed pretty stout, but I just haven’t had the time to sit down and do a solid head-to-head comparison.
Luckily, MacWorld has done it for me, and has even thrown in a third FTP client for good measure. They seem to have come to pretty much the same conclusion that I did, which is that Transmit is the better of the three.
All three applications can get your files from point A to point B successfully, but they differed greatly in convenience features and ease of use. Despite having some unique capabilities, Captain FTP 4.2 was the most cumbersome of the three; Transmit 3.2 and Fetch 5.0.1 offered smoother, more natural operation. Fetch is no slouch, but Transmit gets the nod for a greater breadth of features and a beautiful design that makes it a pleasure to use.

1I used to use FTPeel from Freshly Squeezed software (about $20). It was a nice app, had some good features and was lightweight. But, it was a little buggy although I think they have since been worked out.
For the last year I’ve been CyberDuck ($ free) and think it’s fantastic. I like it MUCH better than Fetch and CaptainFTP. (I’ve never used Transmit)

2i wonder if they get paid for reviewing commercial software, ’cause for example CyberDuck is free, and in my experience better than those 3 …

3I used to use Transmit since I discover that the finder is a FTP client as well…
‘to good to have your FTP share folder mounted like an iDisk in the Finder.
Finder is free as well. ^_^

4I’m surprised they didn’t review YummyFTP. I’ve switched to it from Transmit. I used Transmit since the OS 9 days, but the latest versions were so buggy for me. I switched to YummyFTP because it has a similar interface and just as much, if not more power. And I’ve had no problems out of it at all.

5I wonder, too, why in all these FTP App comparisons I’ve seen so far, they’ve never ever included cyberduck. It’s a great App, free and serves probably beyond the scope of most users FTP needs…

6Fugu is a great interface into SFTP. As such, it doesn’t work with FTP, but I’ve found it rock stable and lightning fast, compared to my experiences with Cyberduck which were slow and occasionally buggy.
Cyberduck gives me enough trouble that I ues the FileZilla on the PC to FPT into servers that don’t support FTP.
