MP3 … it’s served us well. It will be around for many more years, too. Several better formats want its throne and, eventually, MP3 will be dethroned. I prefer Vorbis but I don’t hate MP3.

Well I don’t avoid using mp3, but I do get music in superior formats wherever I get the chance (i.e. when I get to rip them myself)

Good points. I am very much interested in ogg and flac. But mp3 has become ubiquitous (for good and bad).

I am not saying mp3 is superior than ogg etc. Its good enough for my needs.

Happy birthday mp3, this just reminds us how old and outdated and depressingly common codec you are. Please retire soon you old fart.

And yes, my portable (and desirable, including stylish and as small as an ipod) player does play ogg and flac for that matter.

brilliant piece of kit. Another superior player I believe is the iriver.

So lets hope in a few years time we can celebrate the a superior format such as ogg becoming widespread and well supported and look back on mp3 with a tear in the eye remembering how it popularised compressed audio formats.

I find it surprisingly odd that mp3 still isn’t as mainstream as it should be. I mean, by now every stereo and music player should support the format and let you record in mp3 format. The CD only took a couple of years to be included in almost everything, mp3 has been around for five and it’s still not as good as it should be.

Even though it’s outdated, if it wasn’t for mp3 music would be much less popular, and there would be less rappers making millions… *ponders*

Seriously though. I think MP3 does a great job, and I use it everywhere. I have an portable mp3 cd player. And mp3’s on my computer, and an mp3 cd player stereo

No, you do have a point, ogg does not work on my portable player.
It is however, moving up in acceptence.
I think theres 7 ps2 games, 12 xbox games and a couple of gcn that use it.
Halo 2 uses it for audio(it was actually cheaper to use then wma) and its used for mic-chat over xbox-live.
While I have nothing against mp3, it would be ludicrous to count out ogg just when its getting its legs

How compatible is ogg vorbis? Does it run on a portable device that you would like to buy?

Ogg does sound better, but mp3 works anywhere, anytime and on anything. Except on some Sony devices.
