With the exact same look as the previously spread around the internet screenshots of Longhorn 5203 the Windows Vista Presskit images have been released.

It is nice to see a pretty good listing of information on each document, and the information is arranged pretty nicely in my opinion.

Folders look a little different. I don’t know if I like that. Hopefully icons like that are scaleable.

And as you can see, they still are using some pretty heavy transparancy on all of their windows to make it look fancy.
What do you think, was it worth the wait?
You can see more images, and higher resolution images at Microsoft’s website.

Is that supposed to look good? Because it doesn’t.
No, it’s supposed to look fisher-pricey, to suit the people who are going to waste their money on it.
looks like winxp with a nasty skin
it looks horrible! and they are trying to get that fancy look that OS X has. Look at the folder icon! its the same as Mac OSX except sideways.
MS pisses me off so much
Well there is no way I’ll be switching from OSX Tiger to that horrible thing!
A very bad and cheap looking rip-off of OSX. Not saying it’s the exact same but they definitely peeked at OSX while designing.
David, I hope you’re joking. It’s one thing to think it’s fugly compared to OSX, but claiming it’s a rip-off makes you look like a moron. I have a white car, I guess Ford ripped off Apple too right?
Not to be rude, and whatnot, but there is a reason it looks like OSX… Because Microsoft has always ripped off Apple, why would they stop!? When they came out with the Xbox 360 and asked the asian market who they thought made the device, they got Apple as one of their answers and thus were happy with the design of the Xbox 360.
As for Vista (Longhorn), all OS’s are going to look more and more the same because its what they users want.
They could have tried for a cleaner and simpler look, instead of this barf worthy design.
I like it
AHAHAH, but seriously, it took them four years to add translucency?
Well my thoughts are, I hate it. I sure hope Lon….err…Vista has the ability to apply different visual styles like XP because I sure hate this GUI. The icons are ugly also.. First thing I’m doing when I get my copy is changing my whole shell. Overall, I like the features it’s going to provide though. Can’t believe I said that about a Microsoft product.
u.g.l.y, microsoft aint’t got no aliby..!
serisouly, it does look a lot like OS X – too much to be concidental
#6 David, your right, Microsoft has always looked at Apple, and tried to mimic them.
#7 Wow, what a stupid suggestion.
Will all of you just stop being haters?!? Ya know, I actually LIKE Windows. I love OS X too.
I’m not a Microsoft fan, but some of you really do exagerate. Everyone looks at Longhorn and says “it’s Windows XP with a new skin”.
If you bother reading any article or review about one of the Longhorn builds, in almost all of them they will mention that the UI is temporary and it hasn’t been fully taken care of, Microsoft is wasting more time on making the OS functional instead of making it pretty, that sounds right to me…
I understand that a nice UI is important, but what good would it be if Windows ME had XP’s Luna skin? It would still be a really bad OS, UIs don’t make an OS, they’re part of it, they’re not everything an OS has to offer, any Linux build will tell you that.
I think it looks rather nice, I can see it’s using some kind of blurring for the edge of windows. I believe from other posts that it runs off DirectX3D so i would think some pretty cool effects would be apparent. Not like that shitty MacOS mould minimizes thing, and all can be installed in 15 mins apparently.
I also hear that WinFS is not going to be ready in time for the release, which is a shame, I personally believe that WinFS will revolutionise computing, think of all those databases talking to each other.
I am still using Microsoft Windows 3.1! I still think it is much more stable and reliable than all other OS’s from Microsoft. This Windows Vista OS is just Windows 3.1 with more features! Why waste money you can get a copy of Windows 3.1 for free. Smoke a fattie and try out Windows 3.1! You can’t tell the difference.
Trees and Bees please. No cheese and fleas.
I think microsoft should work on loop holes rather releasing new OS with same crape kernel and makeup.i think “longhorn” will be “longhorror” for both microsoft and end users.New releases from Microsoft is yet another problem in Software industry.
First Microsoft should fix the old loop holes then they can go for new release
I think y’all should think about what y’all telling here.
Microsoft ripped off Apple? Maybe…
But don’t forget that Apple ripped of it’s first GUI from Commodore Amiga…
I think y’all seem to have forgotten about the Amiga Workbench?
So don’t go running around with all this rip-off shit, cuz you could even say that OSX was ripped off from Linux Redhat as well…
What makes Vista special is not the looks. Personally I think they’re nice, but what I love the most about Vista is how much easier it will make my life as a programmer. For who compares Vista to Mac OS X, imagine the following. Imagine that Apple would be able to change Java into a fast runtime environment (it is still very slow, you know?). Now, imagine that you would have instead of having Java as simply a runtime on top of the operating system, it would be part of the operating system. Imagine that huge chunks of Mac OS X would indeed be programmed in Java and that the interface exposed to the programmer would not be in some unmanaged language, but all in Java (leaving unmanaged interfaces only for compatibility purposes)…
… well if you can imagine all the benefits of such an architecture, then maybe you’ll grasp the real power of what MS is trying to achieve with Vista, when they’re exposing the entire OS via .NET.
Hey, I saw an HP logo on an iPod… hmmmm… do your G5′s have it too?????!
I heard rumors that HP endorses Microsoft..
They’re also a PC company…
I’ve got to think about all that before i think about reconsidering microsoft and PC.
why are we talking about MAC? mac is not an issue…anyways, i like how microsoft is making vista easier to use, and i cant wait for winfs to come out. BTW..that is an amazing idea that microsoft did not steal from anyone.
If you want to start building UI’s Mobiform Software Ltd. has a free beta tool (XAML Designer for WinFX)- Aurora. http://www.mobiform.com has all the details.
All you Mac users piss me off all you do is bitch and complain.
does anyone remember that rainbow apple. what ever happened to it. it was freakin gay!!
Remember everyone, this is a beta. It doesn’t represent the finished product. The finished version is going to look much better than what you see here.
You guys are unbelieveable. Windows Vista will be a huge hit and will continue Microsoft’s dominance of the desktop and server market.
For everyone who comes on here and gives Microsoft sh*t, here’s an idea – why don’t you build a better operating system, market it better, and capture 95% (did you hear me? NINETY FIVE PERCENT) of the market share on the planet, then come back here and I might listen to you. But right now, shut the f*ck up.
all these mac users are just bitter that vista is going to be better organized and better looking. it will make your computer fly with the way it organizes folders and files , unlike the current, more unorganized mac and ms versions. everything has a designated place on the harddrive so it isnt a slower process when accesing files etc, mac users can suck it
i agree with ler, mac users can suck a fat one, damn mac users, you arent even cool
Miguel Correia is really the only person here that has any idea what they’re talking about with the exception of people saying that Microsoft hasn’t gotten any ideas for some of the features of their new OS and look it from outside OS’. I mean, they didn’t just pull these ideas right out of their ass. #28, kill yourself before ever speaking again. #27, better organized? You’re an idiot; if you want to compare locating files faster in regards to Vista and Mac OSX Tiger – do some reasearch on Spotlight. In your fine, optimistic, and poetic words, “suck it.” #26, Yeah, you’re right, to a certain extent. Just wait until late 2006, though – Mac OSX on x86? Now this is to more or less the rest of the people – sure Apple says that you’ll have to have their hardware to use it, but, it’ll eventually be cleared for use as a primary OS on simple non-Apple desktops. This probably will become Microsofts largest attempt to “have similar features” [steal, copy, whatever,] from other OS’, and mainly OSX as it will be their real competition. Say what you will – this is a threat to Microsoft. Microsoft is just hoping that people will stick with what they have been using for the past – what, decade?
Ur All just Mac Fanboys R ent U ? And anywas u go and try dis, oh wait i forget u cant cos u dont hav a beta!! Ooops i just found mine!
I think the UI looks very attractive. I’m also a fan of OS X but to those who say its a cheap rip-off, they are wrong. Many of the features in Vista are either brand new or atleast modified. Also to those blasting Microsoft, they’ve already made an entry into the Apple market by releasing Office 2004. Ill also remind you that most people use Office as opposed to Appleworks because Office is a better software. So before you say how Apple is waaaaay better than Microsoft, Apple may become part of Microsoft. Also Apple’s transition to x86 will make it much easier for Microsoft to code more software for OS X.
Also, I’m sure Apple would’ve gone with AMD as opposed to Intel because the chip design is more efficient. However, Microsoft has better relations with Intel and if Apple had gone with AMD, Microsoft might’ve dropped Office support. This shows just how vulnerable Apple and OS X are.
Um… Apple went with Intel solely because the future of Intel looks better than AMD. The AMD processors are starting to crap out while Intels are getting better. The Intel Pentium 4′s are more efficient for Apple’s needs. The AMD’s are good for gaming. That’s it. Not a big issue for Apple. As far as Apple becoming an MS company. Not likely. There has been speculation that eventually Apple will stop making Mac and just make iPods, but that won’t happen too soon. And, if it does, you can say goodbye to any hopes of something innovative and new in your precious Windows. Everything MS has ever done is, in some way or another, just a ripoff of something Apple did. And, Skywalka’, I agree. Office is a pretty good application. You can say that it’s the *only* good thing MS has ever done. And, don’t counter with “MS has 95% of the desktop market.” Just because most people are generally too cheap to buy a decent Mac. And really, that’s what it comes down to. Mac suffers because Apple refuses to make shitty-made computers like HP, Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc.
Intel’s latest release was the Dual-Core CPUs which arent even as good as AMD’s Dual-Core CPUs. Even when you match CPU to CPU, an Athlon64 3500+ consumes less power (90mm) at full usage than a 3.4GHz (550) on Idle.
Even Intel’s 600 release while not requiring the heatsink the size of a case doesn’t really offer many new features with the exception of EM64T. And besides, AMD’s processors went 64 bit years ago. Not to mention that AMD processors are WAY more efficient due to the Integrated Memory Controller and FSB, they consume less power, and they generate less heat. Granted, AMD has some stability issues but they are being worked out.
In addition, the NForce series of chipsets are far better than their Intel counterparts in terms of features and performance.
ohh.. by the way you just used 2 words in a sentence that should never be combined, “Intel” and “efficient”.
i farted
What #32 doesn’t tell you is that MS’s “95%” of the “market” is on its way down. It began with OS X, the higher performance hardware, the simpler interface, the more intuitive look, all combined to make a smarter OS than MS could ever muster. Hey, you only see people complaining about MS in here! Apple users are very happy with OS X. Besides, Apple poses no threat to MS at all, the only reason you’ve ever heard that is because MS wants you to think it has a competitor. But it doesn’t; it is a complete monopoly.
Linux is on the rise. In time, that 95% of the market will rot away. Have a nice day.
PS. By the way, don’t even start the AMD vs Intel debate. The only difference I’ve seen is that Intels cost about $200 more.
#35: Apple users complain about MS, MS users complain about Apple, that’s what happens. Plus by your logic in the second paragraph, it’s linux cutting into MS’s share not Apple. Besides, why should I spend $1000 on an apple that has less processing power than my $450 custom-built PC. Also, since we’re talking about rip-offs: Dashboard Vs. Confabulator
Mac vs MS blah blah blah….

if mac soooo good…then why u looking up windows vista….why would u even care if ur mac soo freakn life fulfilling….get a life u freakn geeks….
Everybody who thinks that Microsoft rips off Apple is stupid, pc’s came before the apple computers firstly, with a completely different interface, a start menue at the bottom of a screan, as opposed to the same task bar with slightly more options at the top of a mac screen, which makes it clear that apple wripped Microsoft off, secondly, just because they made the icons bigger it doesn’t mean they’re wripping off Apple….
Vists looks so much better then OSx, so stfu.
If OSx is so good howcome everything runs on windows?!?! u fkng macis
All this argument between OSX and Vista….i personally like the looks of vista…( at least its not fisher price blue)
The idea behind the core os seems to be good also. and it sounds like from a programming view it will be good all around…the way it interacts with hardware
I don’t know if its because i am a windows user…but i tried osx on a dell laptop last week (hacked developers version)…I was impressed with the graphics of osx…(mainly the dashboard was cool…definatly a linux ripoff). Installing programs seemed like a guessing game….it asked the drive …but nothing else… the spotlight found stuff quickly…but in windows i already know the location..
I dont know…windows just seems more logical in its layout…and i think the menu is a much better/faster way to access programs. but again…i am a windows user…so i am used to its layout..
Vista looks promissing (i am installing the beta right now…so i’ll see)
ok..i just got done installing longhorn…first off..i want to say i am suprized that my 3com netowrk card had no drivers…that thing works in anything…
the transparency is cool…the windows also have a minimizing and maxamizing fading effect…
programs and operation in the os seems to be real snappy…IE7 loads almost instantly…
i do not like the changes in the start menu…when you click the pragrams button the progs show up in the menu where the recent programs are usually shown…the think i dont like about this is that once its full it does scrolling(i hate scrolling…i like to see everything right away)…but thats ok…classic menu is still there…thats my menu of choice anyway
…i need to find drivers for my network card…with out network theres not much else i can test
first of all the skin looks great if you hate it your retarded second this is the beta 1 idiots wait for the beta 2 stupid morons
hey guys, stop making fun of this marvel peace of microsoft 4-year working. i agree with you about its appearance it looks like MAC OS X, but is totally different, this OS which is called Windows Vista (longhorn), is going to be the best operating system in the world, dont tell me that MAC OS X is going to win. NO WAY, microsoft the leading corporation in softwares is and will always be the best, this operating system is made for an easy interface, connects directly, and its worth it. u’re not getting ripped off when buying this product. and by the way, MAC OS X, also copied alot of things from microsoft, even its using microsoft softwares in its operating system. thank you.
I downloading now Windows Vista… il be back
Ok…
Honestly.
I’m a animator… at work I use Mac.. at home I use a custom built pc. And in all reality I think what Microsoft has done with Windows is revolutionary.
For one: the UI is simple and efficient, and don’t forget if you don’t like it Windows packs the options to change/modify it. The fact that they added a few flashy effects that remind people of OS X just makes the entire thing alot nicer to look at. You also have to remember that Windows didn’t want to drop the entire look that they had been using for the past… gods know how long. So they modded it. *Shrugs* it still looks like windows, but just because it has different attributes doesn’t mean you should bash it.
Secondly, the entire system has been pretty much rewritten, it won’t be xp with a new skin, I’ve been playing around with Beta 2 and it has seriously impressed me.
Thirdly, No One really has an original idea anymore according to everyone here. And in all honesty i can’t say that I disagree. But just because MS decided to change their interface should not make them the object of ridicule from Mac users. You guys make me ashamed to even USE a mac. Stop going on your superiority rants, but that goes for both groups here.
Personally i love both systems, they both have their good and bad. I think mac might try to make their computers more personal consumer based, as opposed to just the animation and gaming industry. Linux is on the rise but it will take alot more then what they are doing to get them to be a big part of the market. In the end all that can really be said is that the next few years are going to get interesting. But they always have been, and I look forward to seeing what will happen in the tech world.
Signing Off
Anaiya
bay do you mean big mac from mcdonalds?
i didnt no they had operating systems
I miss the DOCK in Windows Vista.
#46 – You’re such a freakin’ cabbage . He means Macintosh you silly child , i should put you in the naughty corner for such a stupid post .
The new Windows looks pretty cool to me. I like the shiny & translucent touch to it. But even more important is how well the new OS does it’s job, because changing the looks is easy yet a minor issue. These “That company copied our idea!” liners is very immature & stupid!
“Wah Microsoft is an evil corporation wah Microsoft sucks wah you don’t know what you’re talking about”… There is much more to an operating system than the UI, and there is much more to life than name calling over difference of opinion about an operating system. Try Linux if you want to fully unlock the potential of your computer… (by the way don’t bother lashing out at my comment I use Linux, OS X and every version of windows right down to 3.1 I’ve been around the block when it comes to OS’s) bottom line is MS has been at the top of the world and it’ll probably stay there for quite some time. It doesn’t mean that they are the best, it doesn’t mean that they’re the worst, only that they are monetarily the most successful. Find an OS that you like and use it, just keep one thing in mind: nothing is perfect
…except for Howard Stern
#48 dont you be callin me cabbage i will smack your f’n head in b*#ch.
OK loosers…don’t draw comparisons between these vendors (AMD-vs-Intel, or MS-vs-Apple) , market share, etc based on your your lame as$ opinions. Get a CLUE….and stick to the facts.
First off your all ding dongs, secondly Windows source is actually a port of MAC to begin with. Thirdly your judging a beta version of an experimental OS, which means theres still bugs, skins missing and certaing software issues to be worked out. And lastly this is beta 1 theres suppose to be 3 betas altogther, they already tested the system in its early design aka as longhorn.
@ExtraCheese, I do stick to the facts you fucking dumbass. I’m making an informed comparison and I was just highlighting Apple’s vulnerability not saying AMD was better than Intel. READ BEFORE TALKING.
PC rules….Mac ‘n’ Trash Sucks
Here’s some good “fink”ing: its called marketing, you idiot.
Windows is the bane of quality and has been ever since indows 95, which is what all of the debate is about on this entire page ………..
Example: If stability means having your computer crash when you load up the computer, then Windows is perfect and there is no need for debate.
Example 2: And, what, $200 for a cdkey? If you call that a worthwhile investment, then Windows is perfect and there is no need for debate.
Vista’s going to take some work. Does everybody here really think that OSX was original?
It looks really cool! I’m looking forward to see the final version.
You Mac guys are bragging about Mac OS X being original? What the f*ck are you talking about? Mac OS X is just a pretty interface with and underlying UNIX OS…yeah, talk about original. Whatever good processing performance Mac OS has, be thankful to UNIX. Well done Apple, now you can’t even build a OS from the ground up.
ehehehehe… vista, being compared to mac osx? u freakz!!! u cant judge the vista os yet, coz at one point, its just a beta release so stop comparing. sure it looks like a mac, coz with the familiar “file menu” hidden in the explorer(you can unhide it though), the icons, specially the recycle bin, and the search box, which is also included in every explorer window, as of the mac window. maybe designers did because thats what the users look for, so they give it 2 them..
mac users, stop it at once, stop judging until you get a hand on this windows vista, and please stop playing somebody who is far superior, just shut your mouth and cry in the dark, coz windows vista will be the best os ever made.. maybe you can wait for the mac os x leopard, that might be your “only hope” to brag about… hehehe! butt out! fake superiorz!..
WOW … Microsoft is aweosme. I love the new vista. It makes me go to poo …. :)Ohh …..did i poo on my laptop screen ….awww i spoiled the microsoft look awww.. :(:::::I am so sad now … Hang me cos i poo’d on mickysoft …
cry out loud MAC-erz!!!
Just a reminder to some people:
whatever, Bomag… i guess you’re one.. was that you? taken by your parentz? oh.. how sweet..
looks like someone used windows blinds on a windows xp os (probably microsoft did)
and its agreed that they r takin’ macs looks
http://www.computer-gods.com has some cool stuff explaining vista
Everyone is comparing an unreleased Windoz Vista with a real world Tiger OS X. Windoze users say Vista is superior because of this and that. The comparision isn’t even fair, you should be comparing Vista with Leopard, which will be released about at the same time than Vista. If Tiger already is an OS worth comparing with Vista, I can only imagine how superior will Leopard be.
It seems incredible to me, that a HUGE corporation like MS can’t really keep up with what a comparatively small company like Apple is doing. I mean, MS should have thousands more people working on Vista than Apple on Leopard, and still, MS is regularly playing catch up… what gives? And that’s not to mention that Apple also designs great hardware. I think the future will be really interesting, when Apple finishes it’s migration to Intel. Then things will get really spooky for MS. Google is making them mad, Apple will once more will scare the hell out of them!
Ok… Here is a little real world situation that will make you all realize how weak and unstable MAC and MS operating systems are. I am a graphics designer who specializes in logo design and corporate identity. I use a mac at work, I use a PC at home. I have a client who I’ve been designing a complex logo for. Of course I use Adobe photoshop and quark for designing and I trust that software with my life, because without it I can’t draw a check.. anyways I work hours on the base of my design at work, and being a careful person I make millions of backups, one of which goes directly on my PC at home, One on a CD, and one on a thumbdrive. Well after five hours of work my mac decides it’s tired and closes Photoshop without warning, well I’m a bit pissed but I remember my backups and I Rejoyce. I go home and sit at my pc ready to continue my design. My PC decides it will crash while saving some changes, my file is now corrupt… I turn to the trusty ol’ cd… its blank… I remember that I had a difficult time finding the correct file on the unfriendly MAC interface so I decided to look later and forgot to burn the CD.. smart move huh!! well I yank out my trusty thumb drive and thrust it into my USB port… Windows says “I don’t think so”… by this time I’ve spent thirty minutes of my valuable time cussing Mac, PC, and myself… I restart the computer, windows boots, I plug in the USB drive… oh yeah it works… so I save it on my drive since ultimately it seems to be the most stable and safe storage device… I arrive at work, plug in my trusty USB drive and voila… I see my file.. I click the Icon… photoshop opens…then closes. I open it again….it closes….I open it…closes…opens…closes… I reinstall everything…lose all my color and config settings… start from scratch, but it works…FINALLY… then I realize something… SHIT!!! my revisions didn’t save, that damn pc didn’t save the file correctly… my client arrives, I didn’t have the requested changes made… I lost my $250 contract… so when Apple, MS, Linux, or any other OS creator decides to pay me back… I’ll tell you which one is better… until then they all suck ass!!!
cry more loser
This is simple, this version of windows, was made because alot of people would go for mac’s and OS Mac OX beucase of there fancy looking OS. Of course every one knows that windows is more easier to use and has an easy interface, so microsoft goes in and makes it have the easier look and the fancier look :)
Ok,I’ve seen all the arguements for and against Mac Operating Systems and PC Operating Systems, may I make an observation?….Thankyou, now the point is it doesn’t realy matter what operating system a person runs on his/her computer,it’s what they do with the operating system…isn’t it?,I get the impression that you basicaly turn your computers on and spend more time admiring the Operating System,it’s features, quirks and foibles than actualy using the computer for it’s intended purpose, you do use your computer for it’s intended purpose, don’t you?,I mean what is a computer for?
why do some people just take a look at an os that is currently in a beta state and post annoying comments that it looks stupid
moreover, it’s a beta and things are bound to change in the finall version. And just because some people doesn’t like how it looks doens’t mean that the majority doesn’t like it
this is just an UI. You can’t judge an operating system just by it’s looks. There more important things that make an os good like accessibility, how stable it is and so on
I don’t care that much how vista looks. I mostly care how it performs as a daily os.
I’ve read a lot about it and it has a lot of interesting features that distiguish it from all the other os. I admit that it copies
some of mac os X features. But mac os X also
copies a lot of windows features such as the
control panel, and even the taskbar which is microsoft’s invention.
That’s just competition.
Overall I like vista even in it’s current state and it looks promising even though it might not be a revolution as microsoft stated.
Vista may look a little different than XP. Other than that is doesn’t look like any major improvements have been added. It doesn’t boast any cool new features, it doesn’t seem to be any more productive. We’ll have to wait and see how the security and stability issues are treated. This looks like a facelift to an already crappy system. Good luck guys, Windows is great I’m sure it’ll be an entirely new experience in crashing. Vista is a sinking ship covered in band-aids.
Unix is the result of thirty years of contributing progammers from all over the world. Unix runs the core of the OS-X. Since switching to the Mac, Apple has continuously exceeded my expectations in its speed, flexibility, stability and security. My HP sits in the corner unplugged collecting dust because it is archaic to me now. Switch, you’ll be much happier and a lot more productive as a result.
Holy shit, the ignorance here is amazing. I’ve spent dozens of hours researching this and still don’t know half the details. I do know, however, that the amount of changes will be comparable to Windows 95 to XP, or maybe even 3.1 to 95. You have an entirely new API, new graphics system (as in the code that renders everything, a new engine not a new paintjob), most of the other media IO paths are redesigned too for higher performance (as in performance per clock cycle, that means it can do more per per clock cycle than XP, or can do the same in fewer clock cycles ), not to mention hundreds of other full blown features and improvements. It’ll have built in p2p (and no, it won’t be spied on by MS), an equivalent file-index-access system to Spotlight (which is really just an easily accesable index, nothing more)…these are just a couple of the features. What was Tiger, a couple features and then a few hundred “featurelets”?
“It seems incredible to me, that a HUGE corporation like MS can’t really keep up with what a comparatively small company like Apple is doing. Google is making them mad, Apple will once more will scare the hell out of them!”
I guess you’ve never had to design something to the entire world’s requirments. Also, increasing a team’s size doesn’t make the speed of the project that much faster. It takes me an hour to code a calculator type program. I don’t think 3600 people could do it in one second. An OS is the same thing, but on a much larger scale. First of all, there still can only be a few people who oversee the entire thing, they can only pass out so many instructions per day. Then the thing has to be compiled regularly to make sure everything works together. I could go on but most people here obviously don’t care.
This is probably the most stupid bunch of arguements I have ever read, it’s always the same crap MS vs. Mac, AMD vs. Intel, Nvidia vs. ATi bla, bla, bla!!
I thinks Windows Vista looks cool and I hope it’s kernel will be stable even better than WinXP Pro’s kernel.
I have no problems with WinXP(running on my laptop) and most people do I thinks the one’s who complain are hippocrites and they always want more and better why not develop you own OS and run it than complain about the others!!
P.S. to all Intel lover die I’m running a AMD 3500+ and it own’s my friend Duel-core Intel Xeon second to none!!!! In all aspects not just gaming with Win XP x64 it rules!!!
hahaha, pure crap UI design
*sigh* The age old “black or white” debate…
Mac v/s MS, Intel v/s AMD, NVidia v/s ATi Nintendo v/s Playstation v/s XBox v/s boardgames v/s watching paint dry…
doesn’t anyone realise that a large part of the debate has nothing to do with quality? Here’s a few facts
FACT 1: Just because a company dominates the market doesn’t mean its product is of high quality.
FACT 2: Just because a company is good at marketing doesn’t mean its product is of low quality.
FACT 3: Microsoft copies Mac, Mac copies Microsoft, Linux copies microsoft, mac copies linux, microsoft copies linux, linux copies mac… This is how innovation works people… Someone sees someone elses idea and things “That’s a good idea. I bet I can make it even better” No one would ever make any progress if they weren’t looking at each others work. Every single famous mathematician copied his predecessors. We wouldn’t have gotten where we are today if every one of them had to rediscover 1 + 1…
FACT 4: Different companies target different markets. While microsoft is going for the intermediate to advanced user crowd, Mac picks up on the “I’ve never used a computer/I don’t want my users to have options” crowd (ie: schools/businesses). Linux generally goes for the IT/Networking/I’d like to write my own operating system crowd. If every company was looking to sell to the same people, every OS would look the same. The reason why Mac limits users options is because it limits their ability to destroy their own computer. One of the main reasons why Macs are so popular with schools/companies is because of this. That way, they don’t have to shell out a bunch of cash to build up security features and user options. Comparing Mac to MS is comparing apples to fire engines(and no, the fire engine isn’t copying the apple because it’s red…)
FACT 5: Pretty graphics don’t make a good operating system. Some of the ugliest operating systems are the most functional *cough*linux*cough*
FACT 6: Pretty graphics do make a good operating system. There’s a reason why UNIX isn’t the market leader in operating systems.
FACT 7: People should be forced to post their real names and addresses in forums like this. That way we can all avoid wasting time reading arguments like “PC rules….Mac ‘n’ Trash Sucks” and “mac users can suck a fat one, damn mac users, you arent even cool”… because everyone would be afraid of getting beat up…
FACT 8: Just because Microsoft is a big corporation, it doesn’t mean that everything they put out is utter crap.
FACT 9: Just because Apple is a small(er) corporation doesn’t mean that everything they put out is utter crap.
FACT 10: The fact that all of these companies are still afloat means they each have something to offer. Every OS is good for different things.
Now close your eyes and picture this… What if one day we had a single operating system. One with UNIX functionality, Windows compatibility and Mac accessibility. I call it Wimacix! :D And just think… when all you boobs out there are using the same OS, mass confusion would errupt, and you’d all sit there and insult yourselves ;)
Personally I am very excited about windows vista. I have always used windows up until recently, I now have a mac. What I have found is that they both have pros and cons. Apple does have a great product and if I had to compare it to XP, I prefer mac os x. However, I will have a pc with vista when it comes out. All systems have downsides and upsides.
To those of you complaining about the stealing of ideas, know this: OS’s have been around for a long time and you can bet your ass that everyone is borrowing from each other.
To the idiot that that windows came out before a mac, do your research. Mac started as apple and windows came after.
To the other idiot that thinks all a mac os is is unix, again do your research, there is alot more underneath it.
Finally come on, the new UI is pretty cool on vista and the new system being completely redesigned, new code and all, might just make this system pretty stable.
window vista is a copy of the mac os.x. and the hole look they have came off of virtual pc i’m sure you all have heard of it. and os.x is not a rip of linx. it is a unix based os. and it is very stable i have been a mac user for years and never had a problem. if you can’t afford a mac buy an older model and up grade it. you can upgrade the process just like you would do on a pc. there is a website calll owc i order parts from them and they are great. i have 2 g3 blue and white that came with 450 cpu and 256 megs of ram 10 gig hard drive. but you have to remeber older model computers. so i upgrade the processor to a 1ghz cpu and that cost me $209 bucks and a new hard drive 80 g hard drive 60 bucks and i got memory the motherboard can only handle pc100 to pc133 sdram maxed out at a gb. and i only paid 30bucks per stick of ram and we are talking about 256 meg and i’m running os 10.3.9 and my g3 blue and white desktops are bad ass. and just as fast as any new pc or g5. so you guys do the math and none of my machines has ever crashed and the computer that i’m telling you about is the one i’m speaking of now.

I am a new Mac user, and switched from windows in May 05 (it’s now Decemebr 05) and I can say I haven’t missed windows at all. All of you telling us Mac users to piss off, have you ever used a Mac? Honestly. Go ahead, head out to an apple store or best buy and try OS X Tiger out. You will see that Vista or Longhorn or whatever the hell they wanna call it now is a total rip off of OS X. Microsoft is copying Spotlight, the look of OS X and much more. So all you Bill Gates ass kissers, try a fucking Mac before you make a Judgement.
Also, I notice that some are saying that OS X is a rip off of Red Hat. Red Hat is based off of UNIX another open-source OS. And so is OS X. They are both based on UNIX. that’s why they are look alike.
whoops, I ment to say that Linux is an open source OS. That whole sentace came out wrong.
Ok, I have been using Microsoft’s OSs for years, as long as I can remember. I just finished building a custome and I absolutly loved the way it ran untill (while using all kinds of virus scanners and what not) It started to crash and lag and the OS would hang up when opening basic programs like Abode Photoshop. It was full of spyware trojens and adware…. I had over a gig of ram full while only running Word. I have had enough of that shit and I hope they fix the security issues in vista.
I recently switched to a Mac and although the system specs were not impressive (for the price I paid)at all it has ran perfectly from day one with out a hick up. It’s THE best computer I have ever owned/Operated.
Now about this OS (Vista) It DOES look alot like a Windows/OSX Cross Bread (Folders have been yellow forever and now all the sudden the same color blue as Mac OS. Even the recycling bin looks the same. But eventually something is going to come out that is better than Mac OSX there is now way around it and this might be it but we’ll have to see.
And about Windows ripping off Spotlight, that’s called evolution, It’s so good that it’s a keeper… for what computers are now, you need something like that. But the Active thumbs of minimized windows ARE a rip off.
I do hope that they pretty it up ( I dont know how much prettier an OS can be after Mac OSX) and I wish they would figure out something other than that blasted Task bar and start menu.
Windows Vista looks fine, but I do have to agree that it is very simialar to Mac OS X. I am a Mac and PC user and I could care less what Windows makes there OS look like it is that they make the world test it and make it better slowly. I get so tired of seeing (NOT RESPONDING) and updates to Windows EVERY WEEK.
Sure it looks great but does it run great? Until Windows comes out with a OS that can run more then 5 weeks without an update and without a crash I will not be interested! Infact if the whole world was not tied into Windows I would own all MAC.
Sorry to say Mac just has a better and more stable OS!
If anyone wants to argue go ahead, but at the head of every LARGE Company they have a UNIX server. WHY? Stability!
What is MAC OS X on top of? UNIX! What does it offe? Stability.
I rest my case.
Is Win/vista better?, is OSX better?, is Linux Better? who cares, just pick the one you like or the one you need and stop trying to evangelize everyone else.
i only use a mac because it serve me well, so donÂŽt need nothing more. it runs final cut pro (for me, the best price/features video editing program) and Xcode (C, C++, Objetive-C, JAVA, apple Script) for programing), so I donÂŽt need Vista, but if you need or like vista, then just use it and forget about the others are using.
For me, the bes OS will be the one you donÂŽt see at all. just the applications
no comments.
I still use Windows 98 and think it is one of the best operating systems Microsoft has put out. I will not upgrade to XP or Vista simply because of the resource issue. I have never had an unexpected system crash with 98 and to be totally honest, my music sounds the same on XP as it does on 98…I’m sure Vista will not have any new advancements here. Newer is not always better!
I totally agree with you, 98 is much better than others specially with games.
im really sick of people saying that everyone is riping mac osx off. A standard was set with the first gui and every other one was loosely based off of it to some degree. just becouse vista or longhorn, whatever u want to call it has a unattractive gui dosent mean thats what they are going to use in the end and they spent more time on fixing up the actual os than just the gui.
im sick of mac users bitching about vista.
they need to get over it. Os x sucks i know this from experience i have used macs quite alot. so dont use ur usual “you never used a mac before”.
if you were truly hardcore you would make you own gui in linux. anyways vista looks pretty good. it should be more stable now and have alot of extra features.
“well if you can imagine all the benefits of such an architecture, then maybe you’ll grasp the real power of what MS is trying to achieve with Vista, when they’re exposing the entire OS via .NET.”
That has to be the scariest thing I have read all year!! If that is true, I am NEVER putting Vista on my PC because it will be a hackers wet dream. With all the security holes that already exist in .NET and Windows, combining the 2 would be a huge mistake.
People plz. Everyone knows that the ULTIMATE gui is one where theres’s a commandline window with a blinking cursor. No mouse. Monochrome colors. Everything must be typed in, and there will be no security holes as everything about the OS will be so obscure that even hackers wouldn’t want to hack it.
Macs are better than windows in terms of UI? Maybe. But each OS is excels in areas where the other fails miserably. Why is this comparison always being done?
It’s just like the argument that Linux’s security is a gazillion times better than Windows’s security.
This is true, but also for people who know wtf they are doing, the securtiy issue is NOT as big a deal as people claim. If you’re behind a hardware firewall/soft firewall, don’t click on iwillhaXorj00.com, have pop-up blockers and anti-virus and don’t click on weird emails you’re probably going to be safe without needing Linux grade security.
So while Linux is safer than windows no n00b who really needs the safety can ever hope to use the OS, not just because it has a steep learning curve, but also because not all the software they need is availble on the machine.
Wow! It looks exactly like Windows XP with too much transparency. It seems microsoft is trying way too hard to copy apple in design. For example expose, the dock, the genie effect, spotlight, dashboard etc. Is there a R&D department at microsoft? It seems that they have no idea to present of their own. OSX looks like it was designed to be used in a advanced environment such as a business meeting or an engineering lab while vista appears at home in a kindergarden classroom. And when it is released microsoft fanboys will tell apple fanboys that microsoft created all of the innovations. And microsoft will receive all attention. I use PC for gaming only in windows. Othewise, on my PC I use debian linux. For all computing except gaming the mac will always be my perfered platform.
i can see what some of you guys are saying, it does look like OSX a bit with all the glass effects and that, but cmon windows is windows nobody can change that. Windows has always been better than OSX thats why 95% of the worlds computers run windows.
I am running Windows Vista Beta 2 on my MacBook Pro. It runs flawlessly. Super fast, super eye candy. Not a Mac OS, but impressive to say the least. I love dual booting. The best of both worlds. I turn on my computer and I choose if I want to run Vista or Tiger. MMMM…
Funny. Mac OS 10.0 to 10.3 had translucent window bars when the window was “inactive”. Now Microsoft is licking up the scraps of that era. Funny.
To the guy who said that Windoze is better than OS X… you’re a complete twat. The reason why 95% of your world is using Windoze is because 95% of your world is using IBM Peecees. Try counting the thousands of Windows users now buying the new Macs and figuring out that although they can dual boot – they prefer to use the Mac OS for productivity and Windoze for games-only.

“my client arrives, I didn’t have the requested changes made… I lost my $250 contract… so when Apple, MS, Linux, or any other OS creator decides to pay me back… I’ll tell you which one is better… until then they all suck ass!!!”
First off, what the hell were you thinking using a beta OS to work on your critical business files? Secondly, after your poor decision results in eminently forseeable disaster, how big of a douchebag do you have to be to whine about in public?
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but do you guys not think that the look and feel of vista will be totally customisable. Im sure it will. So everyone can be happy with the way it looks. In my opinion, they are coders and making vista powerful in terms of the way it works (as a priority). As long as the games and os perform and the interface for the os is customisable thats fine for me.
….and, id also like to add about all those guys saying it looks like windows xp with…bla bla bla…dont you think that the whole windows/folders/files system used on both windows xp and mac osx is a good way to go..very user friendly and easy to get on with…why would they stray to far from something that works well.
u r all bitching about it i bet most of u will use the vista when it comes out
thats right, everytime a new MS OS comes out, more and more people use it. and from what ive seen and from what ive dont on the beta 2, its gonna be a kick ass OS
my balls are itchy!!!
and longhorn can scratch it for me.
#20 you suck Bills gangly ballbags
wow look at Tigers features and compare them to vistas like the calendar, search, and the UI and then come back when you know what your talking about then start your geek war. And whoever said that macs crash and are slow cant be any farther from the truth, they run just as fast if not faster than all PCs becuz of all the anti-virus, spyware and adware programs they don’t need. The only reason for the 95% and decreasing market share is because PCs r just for non tech people who have an obsession with porn
HAHAHAHAHAH WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP!!!! HAHAHAHAHA its so funny they ran out of ideas and are taking macs ideas on their new system is so funny PC SUCKS BALLS
MAC RULES
Lol… this is such an old beta it was quite ugly back then but what can you say this was a year ago. And yea Thats right BETA kids it means there still working on it its not a finished product so dont discourage. Currently its coming along really nicely i think. And as for it looking like mac well how can you prove that they stole ideas from mac… you cant actually prove that in anyway. How do we not know that microsoft has had ideas for alot of the features that theyve implemented in it prior to mac including them. Another note is that this happens everyday in businesses. They take from ideas and they build upon them and they try to make them better. Its not who implemented them first rather who can do a better job. And the finished product on Vista will do exactly that. Another thing i have to add is that Apple isn’t so orginal themselves. Alot of features they’ve added to there os’ are apparent that they have been taken from other places as well. Does anyone remember when Apple tried to sue microsoft back in the 80′s saying it stole its ideas for a GUI based Os? The first GUI based OS was made by Xerox Palo Alto Research Team. Steve Jobs had visited there before he released his OS. He hired away workers who worked on the Xerox Research. Alot of the ideas he got from them were thus included in his OS. And this is true because Xerox tried to sue Apple for the same reason they tried to sue Microsoft for. Here’s a link from New York Times Story 1989 -

The reason Apple tries to point the blame towards Microsoft because its number one competitor of course there gonna try to do that. Apple is just another hypocritical company that wants your money and they’ll do what it takes to make its competitor look bad if it will bring in the profit. When it all boils down to it Apple is no Angel. The only reason Pc’s get a bad rap is because all the stupid fuckin people who use pc’s sorry to say. Ima Pc User. My computer does not crash ever, My computer isnt ridded with viruses because i know wtf im doing. And now if you got a modern pc with Xp service pack 2 you should have no reason for your comp to be crashing or anything of that matter anyways. My Alienware system tops just about any Mac system. Blame the users rather the actual OS dumbfucks! Half the times its your own godamn error that resulted in your pc fucking up. I really hate to say it but its the people who use PC’s who give them bad names. Windows in no way sucks. Least not Service Pack 2 and up. Vista will deffinantly do justice in the final release…
