Windows Vista Beta 1 vs. Mac OS X "Tiger"

I love watching these two operating systems compared. Many comments on FG have people arguing wildly to support their OS of choice, but there are some more indepth comparisons out there, and some people need to do their homework. For Mac OS X users, however, Windows Vista Beta 1 engenders a sense of déjà vu. Isn’t a lot of this stuff already in Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger”? Yes and no. For accuracy, I think it’s important to compare Windows Vista Beta 1 to both Mac OS X Tiger and the promises that Microsoft made at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) 2003, at which the company publicly revealed its plans Read more »

Apple's New Product Is…

Apple is going to show a new product soon, and they are really working hard to get a good amount of hype going. I am pretty sure an iPod Video is finally coming, as many people have been waiting for one since before the iPod even had a colour screen. Apple is preparing a major announcement next week, dropping hints of something as critical to the company’s future as the release of the original iPod in 2001. The company sent an invitation to reporters on Monday morning for a “special event” being held on 7 September in San Francisco. The invitation reads: “1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything”, referring Read more »

Apple Test Drives

Apple has announced their solution for getting a larger chunk of the computer spectrum by offering 30 day no risk test drives. I don’t know if this is such a great idea, but maybe it will get them some good sales. I know that I don’t generally have too many problems with a computer the first month, and with their nice interface, I bet many people will keep the Mac. We’re so confident you’ll love your new Mac mini, we’ll let you test drive it for 30 days with no risk. If you decide you don’t want it, we’ll take it back. Here’s how the test drive works: Purchase a Read more »

iTunes Phone To Hold 100 Songs Max

Even more iTunes phone details, if you can believe it: a source involved with making the commercials for the new handset has confirmed for us that it will only hold 100 songs because Apple is worried about cannibalizing iPod shuffle sales. Our source also says that these first iTunes phone ads will be “music-based spots with people calmly walking down the street on the phone with their shadows and reflections dancing wildly beside them.” Via Endgadget Read more »

Cingular To Carry iTunes Phone

Cingular will be announcing plans next week to offer the Motorola iTunes phone to its customers. The long-awaited Motorola iTunes phone is expected to be unveiled at a promotional event in San Francisco next Wednesday, according to industry analysts. Ovum, the UK-based telecommunications consultancy, said Cingular, which until recently was the exclusive distributor in the US of Motorola’s highly successful super-slim Razr phone, will also be the first to offer the iTune phone. Nintendo Revolution Revealed Soon…

Finally the Nintendo Revolution and its controller will be revealed, on September 16th at the Tokyo Game Show Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, will make the keynote speech that will unveil the controller for the Nintendo Revolution. He will also showcase the hardware by playing several games, including Mario 128. Will it be worth the wait? Will anyone other than diehard Nintendo fans be buying the Revolution? I have heard good things about the usefulness and feel of the controller, and anything has to be better than the new Playstation boomerang controller. Read more »

WinFS Beta 1

Microsoft has released Beta 1 of WinFS, and has created a blog to track its development and features. Seems like they have the big names behind WinFS writing what is going on under the hood of Microsoft’s new file system. Our Beta 1 release is a preview of WinFS, Microsoft’s platform that allows developers and users to unify, organize, and explore data in ways they couldn’t before. WinFS is a critical piece of Microsoft’s integrated data initiative. (Integrated data initiative is a term used to refer to a group of technologies whose goal is to provide better integration for data, since much of user data is locked in individual application Read more »

Apple Special Event Planned For Sept. 7

Apple is planning a special event on September 7 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco to announce a new music-related product. The invitation to those who will be in attendance said “1000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again”. The first part of that phrase was used for the announcement of the first 5gb iPod. Could this finally be the launch of the Motorolla iTunes phone? Read more »

Pioneer's BRD-101A Blu-ray Burner

Well, even before most consumers have Blu-ray readers in their computers, Pioneer has created their BRD-101A Blu-ray burner. One of the strange things about the burner is that it cannot read or write normal CD’s or DVD-RAM. It will do both + and – R/RW DVD’s, so atleast it will have one generation backwards compatibility. It looks like this is just another way that Blu-ray is trying to get into the forefront of the race against HD-DVD. No word on price as of yet, or how long it will take to burn a Blu-ray DVD, but I am very interested in seeing how this technology progresses as my hard drive Read more »
