Well, as part of my original content series, I thought I would start with posting some links to the software I load on my PC that is free. I have a feeling that some of you are using some of the same free software I am using, and others are using “free” software. For all of you using “free” software, have a look at this list, and maybe convert some of your stuff over.
Syntax Highlighting Text Editor: Crimson Editor
Image Viewer: Irfanview
Office Suite: Open Office
Browser: Firefox
Music Player: Winamp
Video Player: BS Player
For Fun and Information: Konfabulator
AntiSpyware: Spybot S&D and Microsoft Antispyware
Downloads: Shareaza (so easy to use my girlfriend can use it.)
Let me know if you know of any better freeware or ones I might have missed out on that I should add to my list.

1I have a fairly comprehensive list at http://j44xm.notlong.com along with links to other lists and sites that I like. There’s a lot of good free software out there.

2AVG Anti-Virus is free program that has received great reviews and I have been using it for over a year now. It’s the best one out there. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

3I used AVG for a while and it’s fairly popular in the freeware community, but I’ve come to prefer avast! after hearing some unflattering results from AVG. My second choice is AntiVir. And for spyware, Ad-Aware is a must alongside Spybot.
(Also, I should mention that my page is primarily a list of programs I’ve actually used and personal recommend, not just a big ol’ list of everything out there.)

5I’m making an initiative to release free applications on my new site. Over the upcoming weeks I will be releasing more free applications (All of them 100% free from spyware or adware).
You can check them out at my site:

(Sorry for the shameless self promotion, but it’s in relation to this post) :)

7Hey, you missed Ad-Aware. That’s the best freeware anti-virus program.

8What about PSPad? Quite a kick-butt free text editor.

9Note that Ad-Aware isn’t an antivirus application, but an anti-spyware/-adware program.

10Great feedback.
I totally forgot about Anti-Virus…my bad. I use AVG as well. I think that everyone should, so I forget that everyone doesn’t.
As for spyware, I know many people love Ad-aware, and really, put on as many programs as you can to stop that annoying garbage software.
Joseph, you are the reason that this site is here. You need to be edu-micated (educated) my friend. Ad-Aware is for Spyware and adware, not viruses, atleast last time I checked.
And Doug, I have not tried PSPad, actually it is the first I have heard of it, but I will have to check it out.

11How about XnView (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/pierre.g/xnview/enxnview.html) for Image Viewer, foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.com/) for Audio Player and Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/) or VLC (http://www.videolan.org) for Video Player. :)

12Among the pounds of freeware I’ve used over the years, one program stands out as indispensible: PowerPro (http://powerpro.webeddie.com).
Behind this glitzless Web site is a program which has replaced at least a dozen utilities I used to run. Custom launch menus, run macros, schedule/automate events, virtual desktops, hot keys…the list goes on. Steep learning curve but incredible power–and quality programming.

13BS Player is nice and light but you get better image quality “out of the box” with Media Player Classic. I have both, but I always end up using MPC.

14I do not want to miss PhraseExpress anymore:
PhraseExpress organizes frequently used text phrases and can paste it into *any* application.

15Meh, Konfabulator says it cross platform but doesn’t work on Linux. Oh well. Crimson Editor I’ve never heard of, but I’ve been looking for a good free text-highlighting program for ages! Thank you!
